Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation
and The Rotary Club of Southbank

yuletide spirit in the middle of Melbourne’s blustery
winter.
The lunchtime event on Thursday,
9th July (12pm for 12:30pm) will cater for
around 1500 guests from aged care and homeless charities across
Melbourne at the
Melbourne Exhibition Centre (2 Clarendon St., South
Melbourne).
This
year’s Christmas in July function has been successfully run.
Held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre with 1500 people
attending. 1200 of were from Melbourne’s homeless
community with Corporates and Community Groups also joining in,
in support.

employment law. It was a very successful event with 44 attendees,
and it was great to have the support from those members who
attended and brought guests along. Thanks also to Narina, Tracey
and Charles for your valuable assistance. A number of the
corporate attendees found the breakfast informative at a business
level and it was for many their first Rotary experience, they were
keen to learn more about our community activities."
Ryder Cheshire Charity Dinner

In April our guest speaker Helen Trueman
talked to us
about the Ryder-Cheshire Foundation and their
engagement in Klibur Domin – East Timor.
If you like delicious food and would also
like to support projects in Klibur Domin this Dinner is a must for
you.
This
dinner was well represented by the Rotary Club of Southbank with
President Philip, IPP Gabe, Chris and partners attending. The
event was fabulous with good music, great food and wonderful people.
In addition, Kevin Bailey gave an inspiring speech which no doubt
helped raise funds during the auction - well, he bought one of the
most expensive items anyway!

The Big
Issue
Street Soccer National Championships

The National Championships will
be held Sunday 19th July at Cultural Forecourt, Southbank,
Brisbane
The event will be launched at
the Homeless Connect on 27 May with the objective of driving
spectators and possible participation in the Corporate Cup.
Homeless Connect brings together Brisbane City Council, state
government, businesses and community groups to provide free
services to homeless people for a day.
So far it has helped over 2300 homeless people.
The first Homeless Connect event was held on 1 November 2006 at
City Hall, Brisbane. It was the first of its kind in Australia.

Brisbane City Council will be sponsoring the
Championships. If you have any corporate contacts in Brisbane who

The event was a great success
with wonderful weather and generally a great atmosphere. The
Rotary Club of Brisbane (D9600) and the Rotary Club of South
Brisbane (D9630) were the lead organisers of volunteers for the
event. We also had the support of the Rotaract Club of South
Brisbane during the day and it was great to see so many of their
members supporting the event.
The morning competitions were between 13
corporate sponsors of the The Big Issue (TBI) and other
supporters, including Brisbane Airport and Qld Corrections, just
to name a couple.
Because of the time restrictions, each
match had to be reduced to 5 minute halves with practically no
break between halves and a turnaround time of about 12 minutes.
It was not easy but we pulled it off! Great organisation on
the part of the TBI staff!
If I am not mistaken, Qld Corrections
defeated last year's winners in the final.
Many other additional specialist volunteers
and supporters were also present including Brisbane City Council,
first aid, physiotherapy and other charities providing coffee, tea
etc.
There were six street soccer teams in the
National Championship this year: Queensland, New South Wales,
Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria Regional and Victoria
Metro. The competition was fast and furious but also fair
and fun. With the pitches set up next to the river, many
balls got wet and thanks to our Rotaractors, most of the balls did
come back to us, all be it a bit wet. Sadly, there were some
balls that were "drowned".
The finals this year was again between NSW
and Vic Metro. Unlike last year, though, Vic Metro won this
year's national championship. The "boys from Dandenong" did
an incredible job and really showed us how it is done - well done
guys!
I should also mention the girls in the
Victorian teams. They were no less amazing than the boys,
kicking goals and also saving plenty of goals.
Of course, each of the players who took
part in the competition were already winners but their dedication
and willingness to give their all is truly worthy of champions!
If you missed it this year, fear not, there is always next year,
which will be in NSW.

Bowling and Laser Skirmish - Tuesday 11 August 2009

This is a true Fellowship event that Family &
Friends are more than welcome to attend.
We
are going Bowling & Laser Skirmishing! Those who attended
last time will attest that the evening will be a lot of fun
and will be enjoyed by the young and the mature.
It
will be at the Crown Entertainment Complex which is over
Whiteman Street from the Casino.
Booking
is as follows:
- Welcome Drinks 6:00 pm – 6:30 pm
- Laser Skirmish 6:30 pm – 7:00 pm
- Bowling 7:15 pm (this will give us time to get our
bowling shoes on)

Lake Attack
The club requires
five volunteers next Sunday (30 August 2009) to run a barbeque
for the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation Lake Attack.
Volunteers are required for a period of two to three hours in
return for our club receiving some valuable fundraising

Kevin
is the Honorary Consul General for East Timor in Melbourne, and
Executive Chairman of The Money Managers Ltd
In 1999 he was awarded a Williamson Fellowship by Leadership
Victoria.
Kevin is an enthusiastic and active member of the Financial Planning
Association (FPA), which has 15,000 members nationally. He is a
former director who sat on the National Board. He was the Victorian
State Chairman in 1995/96, and has held board responsibilities for
both initial and continuing education and public awareness. He has
also held the position of Chairman of the Victorian State
Practitioners Committee, the Secretary of the National Practitioners
Advisory Committee and the Practitioners Assessment Committee. Also
to his credit, Kevin was a member of the National Committee for the
Review of Rules of Professional Conduct and Code of Ethics, and also
sat on the Validation Group during the drafting of Competency
Standards for Financial Planning. In 2003 he was awarded a
Distinguished Service Award by the Financial Planning Association
and was subsequently made a Fellow in May 2005.
Kevin has served on the Australian Securities and Investment
Commission (ASIC) Industry Liaison Committee. He is past chairman of
the FPA Victorian Professional Development Committee and the FPA
Professional Development (P.D.) Editorial Committee. He was also a
member of the National Disciplinary Committee entrusted with the
maintenance and enforcement of high standards of professional
conduct for members of the FPA.
He is a former SAS soldier.

- Dr Judith Slocombe – CEO of the Alana and Madeleine Foundation
CEO
of The Alannah and
Madeline Foundation, Dr Judith Slocombe is renowned
for the dedication and vision which has seen her achieve
Australia’s most highly regarded award for women in business - the
Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year.
Holding an MBA from the
Melbourne Business School as well as veterinary qualifications,
Judith’s work in small business saw her redefine veterinary
pathology before she transitioned into the corporate world as the
Group General Manager of Gribbles Group.
Managing a portfolio of Board
positions, including the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, Open
Universities Australia and VicHealth, as well being the Chair of
the Animal Welfare League of Victoria, Judith’s success is all the

- The Rotary Clubs of Canterbury and Southbank are this year hosting
a public stall for Rotary at the Royal Melbourne Show, between the
17th and 27th of September.

The Rotary Club of Southbank
and the Rotary Club of Canterbury will share a stall at the Royal
Melbourne Show between 17 and 27 September 2009. Southbank
volunteers (with the support of medical professionals from a
variety of corporate contacts) will run a 'Know your numbers
campaign'; testing member's of the public for their blood pressure
throughout this time and will raise awareness of the consequences
of high blood pressure. Money raised from this event will be
used to purchase a defibrillator for the Southbank area. The
Rotary Club of Canterbury will also demonstrate Shelter Box and
sell their Aussie Pride Badges. If you need more
information, please contact Gaby or
President Philip.

To run this stall, we require Rotarians
from each Club to volunteer for two 4 hour shifts over the course of
the Show. Free tickets to the Show will be provided for volunteers.
For the stall, there will
be 88 shifts of 5.5 hours throughout the course of the show, with
shifts from 9.30am-3.00pm and 3.00pm-8.30 pm, with teams of 4 people
per shift. Similarly for
the Great Tasting Experience there will be 88 shifts of 4.5 hours
with shifts from 10 am to 2.30 pm and 2.30pm- 8.30pm again with
teams of 4 people per shift.
Key tasks are likely to be:

Public Relations

Providing information on Rotary and our
community service and volunteer programs

Selling raffle tickets
-
Selling Community Helping Showbags
-
Providing Literacy Program books to children
-
Inviting people to have their blood pressure
checked by medical specialists on site
Briefing sessions will be
run to ensure all volunteers are trained prior to the event.
This stall will expose
Rotary to thousands of prospective members, supporters and corporate
sponsors and will be a key way in which we showcase projects such
as PolioPlus and ShelterBox to the community. It’s a great
opportunity for us all and will give Rotary fantastic public
exposure.

Volunteers for this event
were broadly based on 2 locations: the Rotary stall and the Great
Tasting.
The Rotary stall provided
the free "Know your numbers" service and was staffed by Rotarians
and qualified nurses who performed the blood pressure tests and
provided advice as required. Many took advantage of this
service and gained a better understanding of their own state of
health, with some likely to see further independent medical advice.
The Great Tasting involved
volunteers helping with washing up, keeping the venue clean and
assisting with handing out samples and similar tasks. This was
made so much easier by the friendly staff who were overseeing the

- Salvador Dali: Liquid Desire exhibition at the NGV
On Wednesday, 30th
September we will be having a Fellowship evening that will replace
the meeting scheduled for Tuesday 29th September. We
will be attending the SALVADOR DALI: LIQUID DESIRE exhibition
at the National Gallery of Victoria.
The evening will begin at
Art After Dark, a free program the Gallery runs on Wednesday
evenings. On 30th September the program being presented
is Rapskallion with “music and performance inspired by the life and
travels of Salvador Dali from vibrant Spanish rhythms to early jazz
and wild and flamboyant theatre of Parisian bohemia.” Tapas,
sangria and soft drinks can be purchased at Art After Dark.
There are some great
resources available on the website (www.ngv.vic.gov.au,
click on the “Dali Liquid Desire” icon) that support the exhibit.
The audio guide is an excellent overview of Dali’s life. Bobbi
listened to it (free of charge) prior to her visit, but the guide is
available for hire ($9.00) at the NGV if you prefer.

- Di Morrissey – renowned author

Renowned Author Di
Morrissey will speak about her new book "The Silent Country" at a
dinner organised by the Rotary Club of Toorak.
"The Silent Country" is a
vast and beautiful wilderness, a place which holds secrets and
stories that are rarely spoken. TV producer, Veronica
Anderson, travels to the Northern Territory to retrace the journey
of an expedition that had set out fifty years earlier to film the
outback, but which mysteriously ended in tragedy. Of the
group, led by the eccentric Maxim Topov, few are still alive and
they are reluctant to talk about the intriguing events. It is
through the help of local N.T. Park Ranger, Jamie McIntosh, that
Veronica begins to piece together the puzzle and discover the

- Whittlesea Careers Expo
RC Southbank was there at the Whittlesea Careers Expo to promote the
First Steps Program which helps job seekers prepare their CVs to
maximise their chance of job-hunting success and the Rotary Youth
Leadership Awards (RYLA). Rotarian Steven Aquilina and GSE
Team member Jamie Anderson were there to share these programs with
the community.

Brief notes on the meeting
Geoff gave us an interesting outline of the
challenges we face both in a vocational context and in our personal
lives: how can we be more effective in our communications to others?
Everyone has the same problems (1) too much
information; (2) frequent interruptions; and (3) too many choices.
This makes it very difficult to get your message across. How
do we then communicate with others in a way that is effective?
There are some useful things to bear in mind:

"In order to influence anyone about anything,
you must first enter the conversation already taking place in their
minds" - Robert Collier

"It's not what you say; its what other people hear"
- Frank Luntz
-
"People will forget what you said, people will
forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them
feel." - Maya Angelou
When communicating, use 'sequence' to create the
context, for example, use a story. What should we be asking
ourselves when we want to communicate and get a message through to
someone?
-
What is the message that we want to get through?
-
Who is it that we want/need to get the message
across to?
-
What are their concerns (what is the conversation
already taking place in their minds)?
In short, when communicating, the message needs to
be relevant to the recipient of the message, it needs to be in a
form that can be easily remembered and/or digested (keep it simple)
and the aim should be that the message results in a change in their
behaviour (preferably in the direction you want)!

- Rotary Community Service Awards
The inaugural Rotary Community
Service Awards will be a gala event held at the Crown Casino on May
20, 2010. It will be a celebration of the efforts and
contributions of the organisations and individuals involved in
community service and will bring together supporters of a range of
community service agencies to acknowledge their contributions. The
awards will highlight how these organisations are making a
difference and we will showcase a selection of the amazing work
being done in the community.
These awards will acknowledge
organisations who have demonstrated a commitment to Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) and Business Social Responsibility (BSR) by
supporting those less fortunate or in need. This event will provide
community groups with more exposure to organisations who want to
know how they can contribute in the future.
