A Note from the President …
Well, Gabe is
not quite President yet, so we'll all just have a wait till next
week!
Last Week's Meeting
(Thanks to Troy for the fabulous Scribe notes!)
Chairperson: Reece
Birthdays for the week included Mandy and Bettina.
A
conspicuous absence for the night was Wendy, who vowed to miss the
meeting as it was her birthday that week, and she did not want a
repeat of the multiple singing of “happy birthday” that occurred at
the Worlds Biggest Garage Sale. Not to be thwarted, Bobbi made
a call to Wendy on her mobile, and present Rotarians and guests
proceeded to sing happy birthday the high tech way. A happy
birthday to all those mentioned.
President Barbara reviewed the year of her presidency. As it
was revealed, we had a great year. Some of the highlights and
achievements were:
-
9 board meetings.
-
25 guest speakers
-
6 club nights
-
1 fundraiser at the
Holiday Inn on Flinders.
-
A four way test forum
-
Vocation night at the
new “Fabulous, Magnificent and Grand Melbourne Exhibition Centre”.
-
10 fellowship events
(such as the annual Thanksgiving Picnic and a golf clinic).
Projects such as
ShelterBox, RYLA, YAA,
The very successful
Community Street Soccer State Training Camp (in partnership with
The Big Issue).
... and much more!
On
the membership front, we inducted 8 new members. Unfortunately we
lost 2 great members to other clubs, Andrew Jones and Jason Burnett
due to relocation. We also had 3 resignations, with a net increase
of 3 members.
President Barbara also mentioned “we had a 67% attendance rate,
which rated quite well compared with other clubs and was a great
achievement considering how much travel our members undertake”.
The club raised more than $14,000 over the year, with $1,500 coming
from sergeant sessions fines. That’s a lot of “umm’s”!
There were 16 opportunities for service over the year, ranging from
the hands on to the strategic.
We
had the pleasure of inducting Carl Kelsen as a member, in the
presence of his wife and mother in-law. Congratulations Carl, and
welcome to the club. You are now "on you own" according to
President Barbara.
Gordon outlined the YAA program, a fantastic Southbank program in
conjunction with RC Melbourne, and the company set up by the
students he is mentoring: Hard Yards. It is a great program
that gives young students a taste of the operations of a
corporation!
Gabe outlined his highlight for the Rotary year, the Homeless World
Cup State championship, which was attended y a number of members.
Members got to know the attendees and gained a greater insight into
the problem of homelessness. It was also announced that the club
will continue to support the program in 08/09.
Chris pointed out that through him, our Club is also a supporter of
the Xanana Vocational Education Trust. A wonderful project for
which we are truly fortunate to have Chris "on the inside"!
President Barbara outlined her enjoyment at being a volunteer at
Hanover, and heartily recommended it to fellow members.
Chris conducted the sergeants session, and was fined for letting his
mobile ring just before the session began. Talk about bad timing!
