This week and next week's meetings are very
important for the Club in this Rotary year. This week,
President Gabe will outline the direction of the Club for the next
12 months and offer members a host of projects to be involved in.
Next week (Club Assembly), is an opportunity for
Club members, have seen what projects are available, to have a say
on what the members want for projects - both the ones suggested this
week and those not previously mentioned.
This is YOUR Club, so come and find out what is
happening and have YOUR say on where the Club should go!

Last Week's
Meeting
RI President
DK Lee: "Make Dreams Real"
Last week's meeting was a joint meeting with the D K Lee Cocktail
Party, held on Wednesday at the Crown Palladium. Southbank
attended in force to support our World President. There were
over 400 people attending the event. The party started with an
introduction by PDG Bernie Walsh, then a performance by Pot Pourri,
led by Tania
De Jong including a dance number by our own DG Jim Studebaker.
RIP D K Lee gave an inspiring speech on why and how to Make Dreams
Real. This was followed by another performance by Pot Pourri
and their introduction of The
Song Room, a not-for-profit organisation which promotes the use
of music and the creative arts to enhance learning and development
opportunities for disadvantaged children. ...

Gabe's Message
With the Start of the Rotary year whizzing by, we have already had 2
very successful meetings. The year kicked off with the
Changeover Dinner which was well supported by members (both past and
present) and friends of Southbank. This was followed by our
joint meeting with the D K Lee Cocktail Party where members were
able to see our World President in person and hear him share his
vision for the coming Rotary year.

Changes to the Bulletin
Whilst we are all very proud of the quality of our
weekly bulletin, there is always room for improvement. This
year, we are making the following changes:
-
New name for our Bulletin - we have sometimes called it the
"bulletin" or the "newsletter". Well, the name "The
Southbanker" has been chosen (for now) as the new name for the
bulletin - but we want your suggestion for a better name.
Email the Editor with your suggestions!
-
Roster - the bulletin will have the roster of the next 8 meetings
displayed so you will know well in advance when your next meeting
duty will be.
-
Advanced speaker program - although we are not quite there yet, the
intention is to have a speaker program at least 4 meetings in
advance so you can bring along family and friend (and potential
members) to come along to hear speakers and topics that interests
you.
-
Let the Editor know of how you think we can improve our bulletin.

Young Achievement Australia (YAA) 2008
The Rotary Club of Southbank is, once again, supporting the
mentoring of a group of students in the YAA program.
We are partnering with the RC Melbourne to fund and provide mentors
for this very worthwhile youth development program. This is an
important project for our Club and we want to make sure that we are
well represented with mentors.
The timeframe for the program has yet to be set, however it is
anticipated that it will commence after Easter.
This year our YAA company will have a convenient meeting location,
in the heart of the city, at:
The CASS Foundation
Level 2, 111 Collins Street
If you are interested in participating as a mentor,
please contact
Gordon.
Please note: all mentors will be required to
have a
'Working with Children' card - see Gordon for details.

(Issue 2, 7 July 2008)
July

Change Over Month
"Excitement, Anticipation &
Purpose"
As we get closer to
the excitement of the Beijing Olympic Games, I guess that
Confucious’ well worked saying … "A journey of a thousand miles
begins with a single step" is not inappropriate. But as I look
around our District and feel the enormous support, my first
steps have been strides.
As the newly
installed District Governor, I am very conscious of the history
of our magnificent Rotary District 9800 – the largest in
Australia. I think of the people who have occupied this
position… their various contributions and the legacy they have
passed on. With Carol, I would like to again pay tribute to John
and Joan Davis for their enormous contribution to the ‘life and
times’ of our District. ...
