OUR VISION

A club that is enterprising, caring and productive. Developing fellowship and implementing activities rich in choice, for the benefit of our community.

Meeting 443 - 15 July 2008

A Note from the President …

With the Start of the Rotary year whizzing by, we have already had 2 very successful meetings.  The year kicked off with the Changeover Dinner which was well supported by members (both past and present) and friends of Southbank.  This was followed by our joint meeting with the D K Lee Cocktail Party where members were able to see our World President in person and hear him share his vision for the coming Rotary year.

The beginning is always a delicate time.  It is also a time of great importance for the future as it sets the scene for what is to follow.  Planning ahead is the most effective way of ensuring that we know where we want to be and how to get there.  At the following 2 meetings, we will be going over the Club plan and discuss the projects the Club will engage in so that all members will understand what is happening in the Club, what projects are available and how we can all get involved in serving the community.

This is a special year for Southbank as it is our 10th year of service to the community.  That makes the coming year even more exciting as we look forward to celebrating our 10th anniversary.  With many opportunities for service, I know we will all have a lot of fun in the coming year and making a real difference to our community and helping those in need make dreams real.

Last Week's Meeting

Last week's meeting was a joint meeting with the D K Lee Cocktail Party, held on Wednesday at the Crown Palladium.  Southbank attended in force to support our World President.  There were over people 400 attending the event.  The party started with an introduction by PDG Bernie Walsh, then a performance by Pot Pourri, led by Tania De Jong including a dance number by our own DG Jim Studebaker.  RIP D K Lee gave an inspiring speech on why and how to Make Dreams Real.  This was followed by another performance by Pot Pourri and their introduction of The Song Room, a not-for-profit organisation which promotes the use of music and the creative arts to enhance learning and development opportunities for disadvantaged children.

We also heard from Trevor Cochrane, joining with kids from Richmond kindergarten to demonstrate a Vertical Garden (as seen behind RIP D K Lee) - one of the initiatives Rotary Australia and Mitre 10 partnered together upon for Fix Up Australia Weekend. The Vertical Garden concept encourages kids to grow their own healthy gardens, bringing with them the impetus to follow a healthy lifestyle.  Some of the vegetables were given away.

The food was fabulous and there was plenty of drinks about.  A large number of seats were made available but not enough for everyone - which is ok because being seated meant you couldn't get to the food!

It was a very enjoyable night and a great start to a Rotary year for all present.
