Gabe's Message
In the early days of being in Rotary, I often felt that the
'commitment' to Rotary was only to turn up to the weekly meetings.
As I became more experienced, I discovered that I could get out of
the meetings too! So I sent in an apology if I didn't feel
like going to a meeting and 'got away with it'. It felt like a
great deal! What it led to, though, wasn't so great. The
more I was able to 'slip away', the less I was interested in serving
the community and the more I go the feeling I was not needed and it
didn't matter whether I was there or not. This was, of course,
totally untrue. ...

Changes to the Bulletin
Whilst we are all very proud of the quality of our
weekly bulletin, there is always room for improvement. This
year, we are making the following changes:
-
New name for our Bulletin - we have sometimes called it the
"bulletin" or the "newsletter". Well, the name "The
Southbanker" has been chosen (for now) as the new name for the
bulletin - but we want your suggestion for a better name.
Email the Editor with your suggestions!
-
Roster - the bulletin will have the roster of the next 8 meetings
displayed so you will know well in advance when your next meeting
duty will be.
-
Advanced speaker program - although we are not quite there yet, the
intention is to have a speaker program at least 4 meetings in
advance so you can bring along family and friend (and potential
members) to come along to hear speakers and topics that interests
you.
-
Let the Editor know of how you think we can improve our bulletin.

Young Achievement Australia (YAA) 2008
The Rotary Club of Southbank is, once again, supporting the
mentoring of a group of students in the YAA program.
We are partnering with the RC Melbourne to fund and provide mentors
for this very worthwhile youth development program. This is an
important project for our Club and we want to make sure that we are
well represented with mentors.
The timeframe for the program has yet to be set, however it is
anticipated that it will commence after Easter.
This year our YAA company will have a convenient meeting location,
in the heart of the city, at:
The CASS Foundation
Level 2, 111 Collins Street
If you are interested in participating as a mentor,
please contact
Gordon.
Please note: all mentors will be required to
have a
'Working with Children' card - see Gordon for details.

"Excitement, Anticipation &
Purpose"
The
opportunity to have a Rotary International President visit
Australia during their year of office is a rare pleasure. Last
week The Presidential Membership Conference in Canberra
presented just such an opportunity. Thanks to the foresight of
the Rotary Club of Melbourne, R.I. President DK Lee and his
wife, Young Ja accepted the Club’s invitation to visit our
District 9800 en route to the conference in Canberra. Quite a
coup… engaging a newly inducted R.I. President to address the
Club in his first week of office. Well done, Melbourne! ...
