In the early days of being in
Rotary, I often felt that the 'commitment' to Rotary was only to
turn up to the weekly meetings. As I became more experienced,
I discovered that I could get out of the meetings too! So I
sent in an apology if I didn't feel like going to a meeting and 'got
away with it'. It felt like a great deal! What it led
to, though, wasn't so great. The more I was able to 'slip
away', the less I was interested in serving the community and the
more I go the feeling I was not needed and it didn't matter whether
I was there or not. This was, of course, totally untrue.
The reality is that every member of
the Club is an important member. Each of us contribute in our
own way, and each bit we contribute makes another member's job
easier and helps us, as a club, achieve more. The less contact
with the Club, the more we feel isolated and don't know what's going
on. This, if unchecked, will lead to apathy and eventually
disinterest in Rotary. To prevent this from happening, we must
be able to do two things. Firstly, each member must be
informed of what is happening with the Club, so that each member
still feels part of the 'family of Rotary'. Secondly, each
member must be encouraged to attend our weekly meetings and
participate in other service opportunities.
We will keep members informed via
The Southbanker and I will support members as much as I can by
keeping in touch with members who have not been active for a while.
Southbank is a great club only because it has great members who are
active and making a positive difference in our community - so
get active and make this a stupendous club!
