Last Week's
Meeting
Guest Speaker: District Governor Jim Studebaker
Reminded us of Rotary International President DK (Dong Kurn Lee)
words and desire to make dreams become real for the children of the
world. Jim encourages us to participate and donate in projects
preventing disease and death by the provision of safe water,
sanitation, hygiene, good nutrition, basic medicines and education.
What is 1 project we can do to make a difference? ......

Gabe's Message
One of the projects the Club
has supported for a long time is Steps.
Shirley Osborn began Steps in
the 80’s. She engaged young homeless people on the steps of
Flinders Street Station. The task of engaging these young people
are not easy. Some of them ran away from home because of domestic
violence or other reason and some have travelled from the country to
the city. Each of them has their unique stories but they have one
thing in common – there is a great mistrust of others.

Young Achievement Australia (YAA) 2008
The Rotary Club of Southbank is, once again, supporting the
mentoring of a group of students in the YAA program.
We are partnering with the RC Melbourne to fund and provide mentors
for this very worthwhile youth development program. This is an
important project for our Club and we want to make sure that we are
well represented with mentors.
The timeframe for the program has yet to be set, however it is
anticipated that it will commence after Easter.
This year our YAA company will have a convenient meeting location,
in the heart of the city, at:
The CASS Foundation
Level 2, 111 Collins Street
If you are interested in participating as a mentor,
please contact
Gordon.
Please note: all mentors will be required to
have a
'Working with Children' card - see Gordon for details.

August
is
Membership Development
and Extension Month
"Different and Amazing"
As every PDG will attest, "This is
really different". I'm already amazed at the immense diversity
of the role and... believe me, every day is different. With so
many clubs to visit and new people to meet, I have to confess to
a daily sense of anticipation and excitement. There are large,
impressive projects and statements, but also small endearing
touches that seem to separate individual clubs and Rotary as an
organisation that really cares for people.
It's early days, I know... but as I
move around the District, I have found that three things really
stand out. ...
