President
Gabe's Message
The recent escalating conflict between
Georgia and Russia is a sobering reminder that all is not well in
this world. Apart from intentional human-induced (and therefore
artificial) disasters such as war and conflict, there are other
human-induced problems such as climate change and pollution. On
top of that, natural disasters such as volcano eruptions, fire,
floods, famine and tsunamis. This all sounds very depressing and
it is not something you want to talk about at a friend's wedding -
but it is very real ......

Group Study
Exchange 2008/2009
This Years Group Study Exchange Program
addresses two Countries in Europe:
Sweden (District 2380) and Turkey (District
2420)
There are a number of ways
that clubs can participate in the GSE programme, including
nominating candidates for team leader or team member; hosting
a function or hosting the inbound team for about 4 days. Quite
a number of Clubs have already volunteered to be directly
involved but we may need to ask for additional assistance.
Please find more
information about the Program here:
GSE Brochure
and FAQ
If you would like to support the program as a
host or know potential team members please contact
Bettina or Wendy

Young Achievement Australia (YAA) 2008
The Rotary Club of Southbank is, once again, supporting the
mentoring of a group of students in the YAA program.
We are partnering with the RC Melbourne to fund and provide mentors
for this very worthwhile youth development program. This is an
important project for our Club and we want to make sure that we are
well represented with mentors.
The timeframe for the program has yet to be set, however it is
anticipated that it will commence after Easter.
This year our YAA company will have a convenient meeting location,
in the heart of the city, at:
The CASS Foundation
Level 2, 111 Collins Street
If you are interested in participating as a mentor,
please contact
Gordon.
Please note:
All mentors will be required to have a 'Working with Children' card

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message
(Issue 7, 11 August 2008)
August is
Membership Development and Extension Month
"Rock Star Status?"
At this year’s D9800
conference at Shepparton, you could not fail to be impressed
by the quality of the Group Study Exchange teams…. ours, ably
led by PP Ann Peace of the Rotary Club of Echuca/Moama … and
theirs, a delightful group from Nebraska, who charmed everyone
they met.
Every year, this district
sponsors a Group Study Exchange – every year it ia an
outstanding success and ranks as one of the (…forgive me)
‘jewels in the 9800 crown’.
Certainly, one of the most
visible educational programs of The Rotary Foundation is the
Group Study Exchange (GSE) program......
