Last Week's Meeting

Gordon introduced our Guest Speaker - Gabe's better half .... Dr Aurora Poon. Aurora is involved in the Austin Hospital's Nuclear Medicine and PET scan programs using radioactive isotopes for diagnostic and therapeutic use. These can be administered by oral, intravenous or interdermal means to diagnose or treat a myriad of conditions. Some areas covered are heart / blood supply problems, fractures, cancer and in brain death studies of dementia related problems. Do all the frequent air travellers know that we subject ourselves to higher levels of radiation whilst flying than staying on the ground - preferably at sea level?

President Gabe's Message

Although the impact of the international financial system crisis will no doubt be reduced by the US rescue package of USD$700b, the problem is far from over. Many analysts and commentators have compared the current economic woes to the 1920’s recession. Even as President Bush signs the rescue package, the share market falls, reflecting the market’s concern that the package will not be enough to stave off a recession – or worse, a global financial system meltdown. These are not pleasant thoughts but the dangers are all too real. In the coming years, or even a decade or more, everyone is faced with a very challenging time ahead. Some of us will be able to weather the storm with relative ease, others will not be so lucky.

Have you already registered as Volunteer for the upcoming Homeless World Cup?

We know many of you that have not been able to "sign up" as yet are still considering involvement - subject to other commitments that might arise.
If you are interested in "possibly volunteering" it would be great if you
could let Tracey know so that she can put you on a follow up list to talk to you as time gets closer.

Australia's National Street Socceroos Coach George Halkias will give us an update on the preparation for the Homeless World Cup at our Meeting on Oct 21st.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a week-long residential personal development program for young people aged 18 to 25, which focuses on yourself, leadership and community. Each RYLA candidate is sponsored by a Rotary Club from District 9800. The cost of sponsoring a candidate is used to pay for venue hire, speakers and catering throughout the program. The sponsoring Rotary Club is also responsible for transporting the participant to and from the camp.

RC Southbank is currently looking for a potential candidate to nominate for this year's RYLA Camp in December.
Please contact Michael Fingereth, if you know someone, you would like to support to participate in this great program.

Fellowship Dinner

On Tuesday, 14th October we will be having our meeting at the

ITALIAN WAITERS CLUB
20 Meyers Place
(03) 9650 1508.
6pm for 6.30 pm

As most of you will remember we had a Fellowship dinner there last year and it was most enjoyable.
As is customary for our Fellowship events, friends and family are invited, but we have a cap of 25 guests due to the seating capacity of the restaurant so first in, first dressed -- or as we say in the States, first come, first served.

Please RSVP your ACCEPTANCE OR APOLOGY by COB on Friday, 3rd October via email to meetings@rotary.to.

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message

(Issue 14, 29 September 2008)
September is
New Generations Month

"Looking To The Future"

Clubs are changing in so many positive ways, after my first 3 months as DG, this is very evident. There has been a change in club strategy … Clubs of District 9800 have acknowledged that the Club of the future needs to have a good balance of members. Clubs need to work closely with the public, corporate partners, government authorities and community organisations within the not-for-profit sector.
Soon clubs will be assisted on this journey by the Club Vision Facilitation Program. I strongly recommend the Vision Facilitation Program to you. Our District is fortunate to host the first of the ‘train the trainer’ sessions in Southern Australia.
Vision Facilitation helps a Rotary club design its own VISION, and then sets out the steps necessary to achieve that....
