Next Week's meeting
Membership Information Night
We will be
holding a Membership Information Night on Tuesday 21st October
2008 to profile Rotary’s role in service to the community,
specifically focusing on two of Southbank’s very successful
projects, ie the Young
Achievement Awards (YAA) program and our support of
The Big Issue’s
Community Street Soccer program and the Melbourne 2008 Homeless
World Cup. Our speakers for the night will be some of
the YAA students, along with George Halkias and one of the Street
Socceroos who will be competing in the Homeless World Cup. On the
night, we will also take the opportunity to raise awareness of the
work of Rotary more broadly and to link in the benefits of Rotary
membership on a personal level.
Of course,
this all sounds great doesn’t it …. however, absolutely key to the
success of the night will be your support in inviting along friends,
colleagues and associates who may be interested in learning more
about our Club and Rotary in general – and also in joining Rotary
(as is our usual practice, the first meeting of potential members is
gratis).
Please advise guest
details to
meetings@rotary.to with a copy email to
Barbara by cob Friday 17th
October.
Thanks in advance for your usual support!
Regards
Barbara
PP and Director of Membership

Last Week's
Meeting
Tracey volunteered last minute to take scribe
notes in the absence of our rostered scribe. Due to this
surprise assignment and all the other exciting stories that night
she then ended up leaving her notes behind on the table after the
meeting:-)
Her memory though seems to be fantastic
.......she still managed to provide a short version....:-)
Other members, encouraged by our Sergeant's
task to become a rhyming expert for words like "orange", "month",
"silver" and "purple", did some serious research on that topic and
came up with a solution for the problem.....

President
Gabe's Message
Whilst our
club has a lot of ongoing projects, we should not forget that
there are also many District and other projects we can support.
The best sources of information on all District projects are the
District website (http://www.rotarydistrict9800.org.au/) and the
Networker. The Southbanker has a link to the latest Networker so
every week; we have the opportunity to find out more about what is
happening in the District. There are a lot of worthy and exciting
projects at District: RAWCS, DIK, ROMAC, RYLA, RYPEN, GSE – just
to name a few....

Have you already registered as Volunteer for the upcoming Homeless
World Cup?
We know many of you that have not
been able to "sign up" as yet are still considering involvement -
subject to other commitments that might arise.
If you are interested in "possibly volunteering" it would be great
if you
could
let Tracey
know
so that she can put you on a follow up list to talk to you as time
gets closer.
Australia's
National Street Socceroos Coach George Halkias will give us an
update on the preparation for the Homeless World Cup at our Meeting
on Oct 21st.

The Rotary
Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a week-long residential personal
development program for young people aged 18 to 25, which focuses
on yourself, leadership and community. Each RYLA
candidate is sponsored by a Rotary Club from District 9800. The
cost of sponsoring a candidate is used to pay for venue hire,
speakers and catering throughout the program. The sponsoring
Rotary Club is also responsible for transporting the participant
to and from the camp.
RC Southbank is currently looking for a
potential candidate to nominate for this year's RYLA Camp in
December.
Please contact
Michael Fingereth, if you know someone, you would like to
support to participate in this great program.
Applications close Friday November 14, 2008

(Issue 15, 06 October 2008)
October is Vocational Service Month
"The Challenge!"
This week
I wanted to talk to you about how we, as a District, are faring
meeting RI President’s DK Lee’s membership challenge. His
challenge was to increase membership by a net 10% across the
District and for each District to charter 2 new clubs.
I know through my club visits that we’ve all accepted this
challenge of membership development not simply leaving it to our
respective membership chairs or club presidents. It seems that
there is a genuine interest on behalf of our club members to
encourage friends, neighbours and other people like you and me
along to a club meeting or to membership nights. Certainly, new
member introductions seem to be on the increase. Please continue
to do your bit.
