OUR VISION

A club that is enterprising, caring and productive. Developing fellowship and implementing activities rich in choice, for the benefit of our community.

Meeting 456 -14 October 2008

A Note from the President …

Whilst our club has a lot of ongoing projects, we should not forget that there are also many District and other projects we can support. The best sources of information on all District projects are the District website (http://www.rotarydistrict9800.org.au/) and the Networker. The Southbanker has a link to the latest Networker so every week; we have the opportunity to find out more about what is happening in the District. There are a lot of worthy and exciting projects at District: RAWCS, DIK, ROMAC, RYLA, RYPEN, GSE – just to name a few. If you want to find out more about what Rotary is doing, why not look at the District website or the Networker? Alternatively, you can find out more from our Service Project Directors: Wendy and Bettina.

Our Club may already have a lot of exciting projects but you may be personally involved in very few of them. You may not feel challenged enough compared with what you had in mind as a Rotarian or you there may not be a project that catches your imagination. If any of the above is true for you, then you need to be pro-active. Go and seek out the projects that are available in our club, put your hand up (that is, tell Wendy, Bettina or me) and let us know you want to do something, look up the websites to see what you’d like to do, or simply come up with an idea of your own – something you’d like to do that the club is not currently doing. We love fresh ideas and if it is your passion, the club would like to support you.

So come and let’s make dreams real!

Yours in Rotary,
Gabe

Last Week's Meeting

Thanks to Tracey for fabulous scribes notes.

Meeting 455 Date: 07/10/2008

Hi Guys,

No doubt about it – I studiously took notes tonight and then I appear to have left them on the table. So here goes from memory.

With a quorum present, Charles ran the general meeting which was needed to change the club rules and our by-laws. All proposals were passed unanimously.

Tonight we heard about a great fundraising project "Relish" being undertaken by the Rotary Club of St Kilda – they have engaged with the businesses of Port Philip to put together a recipe book featuring recipes from local restaurants and cafes. The book also promotes Rotary and, in particular, the two causes that will benefit from the fundraising activity – Shelterbox and Sacred Heart Mission. We got the opportunity to look at a mock up of the recipe book and, at $14.95 per book there was great interest amongst those in attendance tonight.

A great idea for a Christmas present, for the person who has everything. (click here for order form) and read more about this project in the recent issue of The Networker

Our guest speaker tonight was Geoff Walker from VicTrack. VicTrack own the assets adjacent to the railway lines and have responsibility for their maintenance. Geoff provided us with an insight into the activities associated with the safety upgrading of Victoria’s railway crossings. He outlined the particularly complex processes involved when engaging all stakeholders to develop an agreed process for prioritising upgrade activities; he also outlined the project management activities to ensure that projects are delivered efficiently and on time. Victoria has 2800 public railway crossings. Prior to 2006, there were 12 to 13 upgrades every year; in 2006 this increased to 45; in 2008 there will be more than 70 upgrades completed.

ONLY A SHORT STORY I KNOW, BUT BETTER THAN NOTHING.

Tracey

some additional comments from the bulletin editor:
Our Corporal/Sergeant for that night Michael G came up with a very challenging question for all of us....we were supposed to find rhymes to the following words to avoid to be fined: month, orange, silver, purple. On top of that he asked us to come up with a rhyme for the word "had".....10times in a row. Very strange!

But it obviously encouraged some members to do serious research on the task. Diane was successful and found clues to avoid fines next session.
If you're curious how to do that?....click here

Richard is looking for Marathon Marshal Volunteers for this season and asked all members to let him know if they would be available for one or more of the upcoming races.

Albert Park Book Fair

Two days to sell thousands of Aussie Bush Buddy Books....quite a challenge.

After setting up the stand Saturday morning, Lyn, Bobbie, Aurora and Gabe were well prepared for the Sale.
More about their success in next weeks Southbanker!
