PROGRAM
Membership Information Night
We will be
holding a Membership Information Night on Tuesday 21st October
2008 to profile Rotary’s role in service to the community,
specifically focusing on two of Southbank’s very successful
projects, ie the
Young
Achievement Awards (YAA) program and our support of
The Big Issue’s
Community Street Soccer program and the Melbourne 2008 Homeless
World Cup. Our speakers for the night will be some of
the YAA students, along with George Halkias and one of the Street
Socceroos who will be competing in the Homeless World Cup. On the
night, we will also take the opportunity to raise awareness of the
work of Rotary more broadly and to link in the benefits of Rotary
membership on a personal level.
Next Week's meeting
Guest speaker:
Tony Thomas (RS Melbourne Sunrise)

Last Week's
Meeting
We
had a great Fellowship Dinner at the Italian Waiters Club!
For all of you who missed it....
make sure you come along next time...
(Thanks to Charles for this snapshot)
President
Gabe's Message
We’ve had
some really good weather for the past couple of weeks – sunny
weekends perfect for going to the beach or for just sitting
outside sipping coffee. It seems almost like we’ve skipped
straight from winter to summer. It sounds perfect but there are 2
sides to every coin. The same weather that is bringing us sunshine
is also not bringing us rain. With our water storage still at a
critically low level (currently 34.4% compared to 80% this time in
1997), we should do what we can to help save water.....

Races - Call for Marshals!
Summer is coming and so are all the races
that need volunteers to make them happen!
RC Southbank has a tradition of sending
Sprint Marshals to help with a variety of roles during these
competitions. This is not just a fantastic opportunity for our
Club to raise some money it is also a great Fellowship Event.
If you are an early starter (marshal duty
normally begins around 6am in the morning), enjoy sports and a
day out, this is the kind of activity to go for!
Please have a look at the dates below and
get in touch with
Richard if you are available
for any of them.

Tracey did a bit of research on the
Homeless World Cup site to find this information - the
nominations for the Australian team.
The Australian Street Socceroos
are:
Alex Marshall (Captain, NSW)
Stephen Maloney (Vice-captain, VIC);
Lorenso Neghad (VIC);
Hamid Arabi (SA);
Kevin Knight (QLD);
Coen Slaughter (NSW);
Toni Whelan (SA);
Eddy Halid (VIC).
For those involved in our
activities with the Melbourne team, you will be pleased to see three
familiar names in the team; and for those at the National
Championships, who could forget Toni from SA!
Australia's
National Street Socceroos Coach George Halkias will give us an
update on the preparation for the Homeless World Cup at our Meeting
on Oct 21st.

The Rotary
Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a week-long residential personal
development program for young people aged 18 to 25, which focuses
on yourself, leadership and community. Each RYLA
candidate is sponsored by a Rotary Club from District 9800. The
cost of sponsoring a candidate is used to pay for venue hire,
speakers and catering throughout the program. The sponsoring
Rotary Club is also responsible for transporting the participant
to and from the camp.
RC Southbank is currently looking for a
potential candidate to nominate for this year's RYLA Camp in
December.
Please contact
Michael Fingereth, if you know someone, you would like to
support to participate in this great program.
Applications close Friday November 14, 2008

Paul
Harris Society
Paul Harris Society is a District based
Program of‘
The Australian Rotary Foundation Trust.
“EVERY ROTARIAN ... EVERY YEAR”
Did you know that EREY contributions to the
APF can help
support all of the Foundation’s programs and Rotary’s funding for
the push to end polio worldwide?
Contributions to the Annual Programs Fund (APF) are the lifeblood
of The Rotary Foundation’s educational and
humanitarian programs. Fifty percent of the contributions go to
the World Fund to support Foundation programs. The other 50
percent goes into District Designated Funds (DDF).
DDF can be used to participate in the Foundation’s programs,
including Polio Plus.
"At the Shepparton District Conference, I attended the Paul Harris
Society Breakfast. The PHS is a great way to support our Rotary
Foundation so that they can continue to do exceptional work such
as Polio Plus, the 3H programs and many more. DG Jim Studebaker
encourages all of us to join the PHS so we can support our very
own charitable organization. Don’t forget, Foundation month is
just around the corner in November!"
Yours in Rotary,
Gabe

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message
(Issue 16, 13 October 2008)
October is Vocational Service Month
"The Drought and Our Plan!"
Eleven
years is a long time to wait for something that ‘should be coming
any time now’ or is deemed ‘about to happen’. But it in rural
Victoria it has been 11 years of waiting and hoping for decent
rainfall.
The ‘longest drought’ goes on and the end is not in sight. It is
literally impossible to be indifferent to the plight of rural
communities. And as the ravages of the drought continue unabated,
it’s important that we continue to make the wellbeing and future
of those communities a focus of our Rotary programs........
