PROGRAM

Tony Thomas (RS Melbourne Sunrise)
"The 13th Century Mongol Conquests and their legacy to Europe"

Tony Thomas is currently Sergeant and Bulletin Editor at RC Melbourne Central Sunrise. He was formerly Associate Editor of BRW Magazine.

Tony went to Mongolia last year and travelled out to Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Khans.

The Mongol conquests were extraordinary because with a population of only 1 million or so, the Mongols subjugated most of Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, stopping just short of Vienna.
The talk is illustrated with slides and photos.

Next Week's meeting

There will be no meeting on Melbourne Cup Day

Our next meeting will be the Annual General Meeting held on November 11th.

RC SOUTHBANK’S
4TH ANNUAL THANKSGIVING PICNIC

As we noted earlier our 4th ANNUAL THANKSGIVING PICNIC has been scheduled for Sunday, 23rd November at St. Vincent’s Gardens, Albert Park (Melways 2K B5.)
Please review the following and get back to Bobbie by COB, FRIDAY 7TH NOVEMBER:

1) If you will be attending and how many in your party. (Remember friends and families are welcome.) How many children and their ages so we can plan activities for them.

2) Is there a dish you would prefer to bring?
If so let Bobbie know and she’ll try to accommodate you. We are scheduled to start at noon; Carving will start at 12.30 PM.
The menu will be sent out by Monday, 10th November.
(Remember that you are asked to cater for approximately 6 people only. An overabundance will result in unwanted waste.)

3) And lastly please remember to bring your own beverages, picnic rugs, plates and cutlery, and sunscreen. And Frisbees and balls for those looking to work off a big lunch!

Melbourne Races - Call for Marshals!

Summer is coming and so are all the races that need volunteers to make them happen!

RC Southbank has a tradition of sending Sprint Marshals to help with a variety of roles during these competitions. This is not just a fantastic opportunity for our Club to raise some money it is also a great Fellowship Event.

If you are an early starter (marshal duty normally begins around 6am in the morning), enjoy sports and a day out, this is the kind of activity to go for!

Please have a look at the dates below and get in touch with Richard if you are available for any of them.

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message

(Issue 17, 20 October 2008)
October is Vocational Service Month
"Our Dual Responsibility"

Vocational Service is a major pillar of our organisation. In fact, many would argue that it is at the fulcrum of Rotary International. And it’s a reasonable case … 1905 …four men in different work areas … a shared dream of community service based on a unity gained through the diversity of vocational perspectives. The rest – as we well know – is history.
Paul Harris said “Of all the one hundred and one ways in which men can make themselves useful to society, undoubtedly the most available and often the most effective are within the spheres of their own occupations”.
Vocational Service is one of the Four Avenues of Service that allows Rotarians to share their skills and expertise as business leaders.......
