Last Week's
Meeting
In absence of our president Gabe, “IPP” Barbara volunteered to
chair last week’s meeting…obviously tempted by two important
circumstantial details:
1. the speaker board at the MCEC allows her to wear flat shoes and
still be seen by guests
2. she must have been starving all week to have enough room for the
delicious food provided.
well.....good for Gabe and good for us.......

President
Gabe's Message
It’s
November and it’s fantastic in more ways than one! Here is why:
We are that much closer to Christmas.
We are finally breaking the public holiday drought with Cup Day.
It’s a new Rotary Month – Foundation! ....
(Full
President's Message here)
Rotary
Foundation Night
November is dedicated to the Rotary Foundation, which is a vital
part of the Rotary International Organisation representing
Initiatives like Polioplus, Humanitarian Grants, Group Study
Exchange (GSE) and Educational Programs like Ambassadorial Scholars
and World Peace Fellows. All of these are made possible by continues
fundraising through the Paul Harris Society, Centurion Sustaining
Members and others.
As current Foundation Chair of our Club I would like to invite you
to join me for a Special Foundation Night on November 18th
with some very respective guests:
Susan Carew, World Peace Clown and former Rotary World Peace Fellow
Dennis Shore, Chairman DS 9800 GSE program
and
Jamie Anderson, a nominee of our Club who has just been selected as
member of the 2008/2009 GSE Outbound Team to Sweden.
Please make sure you mark this date in your calendar and bring
family and friends to celebrate the Rotary Foundation with us!
Looking forward to celebrating with you
Bettina

Only 4 weeks to go.....

The Homeless World Cup is getting
closer.
During the next couple of weeks players from 56 Countries around the
world will get ready to travel to Australia.
Volunteers will be trained and prepared for the event and the
supporting PR Campaign will start to run.
Help us to spread the word within your
network to raise awareness for homelessness!
The Australian Street Socceroos
are:
Alex Marshall (Captain, NSW)
Stephen Maloney (Vice-captain, VIC);
Lorenso Neghad (VIC);
Hamid Arabi (SA);
Kevin Knight (QLD);
Coen Slaughter (NSW);
Toni Whelan (SA);
Eddy Halid (VIC).
For those involved in our
activities with the Melbourne team, you will be pleased to see three
familiar names in the team; and for those at the National
Championships, who could forget Toni from SA!

RC SOUTHBANK’S
4TH ANNUAL THANKSGIVING PICNIC
As we noted earlier our 4th ANNUAL THANKSGIVING PICNIC has been
scheduled for Sunday, 23rd November at St. Vincent’s Gardens, Albert
Park (Melways 2K B5.)
Please review the following and get back to Bobbie by COB, FRIDAY
7TH NOVEMBER:
1) If you will be attending and how many in your party. (Remember
friends and families are welcome.) How many children and their ages
so we can plan activities for them.
2) Is there a dish you would prefer to bring?
If so let Bobbie know and she’ll try to accommodate you. We are
scheduled to start at noon; Carving will start at 12.30 PM.
The menu will be sent out by Monday, 10th November.
(Remember that you are asked to cater for approximately 6 people
only. An overabundance will result in unwanted waste.)
3) And lastly please remember to bring your own beverages, picnic
rugs, plates and cutlery, and sunscreen. And Frisbees and balls for
those looking to work off a big lunch!

Melbourne
Races - Call for Marshals!
Summer is coming and so are all the races
that need volunteers to make them happen!
RC Southbank has a tradition of sending
Sprint Marshals to help with a variety of roles during these
competitions. This is not just a fantastic opportunity for our
Club to raise some money it is also a great Fellowship Event.
If you are an early starter (marshal duty
normally begins around 6am in the morning), enjoy sports and a
day out, this is the kind of activity to go for!
Please have a look at the dates below and
get in touch with
Richard if you are available
for any of them.

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message
(Issue 18, 27 October 2008)
October is Vocational Service Month
"Challenging Times"
In my
article in last week’s Networker, I alluded to the material and
emotional fallout emanating from the US sub-prime loans fiasco.
The subsequent collapse of stocks on Wall Street and the
reverberations in money markets around the world has left people
and large institutions wondering where it would all end.
As I move around our District, the world’s financial situation has
obviously dominated conversation. Aside from personal setbacks,
Rotarians have asked me, “What is Rotary’s position and how has
the financial crisis impacted on Rotary’s investments?”
I have had a communication from RI and it largely addresses the
concerns that individual Rotarians have voiced to me. It is from
the General Secretary of Rotary International, Ed Futa and it is
an update on the financial soundness of Rotary International with
respect to recent developments in the global economy. I think it
appropriate to share this communiqué with you at this time ….
