Last Week's
Meeting
Rotary
Foundation Night
…The theme
for the evening was The Rotary Foundation. November is Foundation
month for Rotary International.
There were many visitors and from your humble scribe’s vantage
point...visitors may have outnumbered members..
Meeting Number 460 was opened by Sergeant at Arms Nicholas Kane with
toasts to Australia and Rotary International and he welcomed
President Gabriel Hau to the rostrum.
President Gabe welcomed our visitors and visiting Rotarians:.....

President
Gabe's Message
We had a
wonderful meeting on Tuesday, organised by Bettina. Thank you,
Bettina, for a fantastic effort. It was so good that the District
Foundation Chair, Chris Don, suggested that we host this as an
annual event for Rotary Foundation!
It was suggested during our meeting that Southbank is an "events
club", implying that we are very good at organising events. I had
to check myself before agreeing that this is probably a fair
assessment.

President's Message here)
The Rotary
Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a week-long residential personal
development program for young people aged 18 to 25, which focuses
on yourself, leadership and community.
Each RYLA
candidate is sponsored by a Rotary Club from District 9800. The
cost of sponsoring a candidate is used to pay for venue hire,
speakers and catering throughout the program. The sponsoring
Rotary Club is also responsible for transporting the participant
to and from the camp.
RC Southbank is happy to nominate Michael Gill
for this years RYLA camp.
For those of you who would like to attend the RYLA Dinner on
December 10th
(Invitation below) please notify Michael Fingereth of Bettina by
Monday November 24th!
Dear Rotary
Club President,
It is my
pleasure to invite you, your fellow Rotarians and partners to the
Rotary Youth Leadership Award ( RYLA ) Presentation Dinner on
Wednesday 10th December
Location:
The Haven Conference Centre, 70 Holloway Rd, Wonga Park, 3115
Time: 6.30pm for 7.00pm with a guarantee of a prompt start
Cost: $20 per head (preferably in an envelope marked with your
club’s name)
Please note there will no alcohol.
The evening will show Rotary Clubs how RYLA can help to change
lives and move towards ‘Making Dreams Real’ and provide the
opportunity to see first hand the development of their RYLA
candidates. Additionally, some clubs have used the evening as an
excellent opportunity to bring along prospective or new members,
to demonstrate Rotary at work as it is a fun and inspiring
evening.
RYLA is a youth development program and one of Rotary’s
outstanding New Generation initiatives. This year the program will
be hosted by the Rotary Club of Boroondara, and will be held at
Wonga Park, Melbourne, from December 6th to 12th inclusive.
Please confirm numbers attending by Saturday 24th November by
email to dcberry4@bigpond.com or by phone to Charles Berry on

I look forward to seeing you at the RYLA dinner.
Yours in Rotary,
Charles Berry,

Races - Call for Marshals!
Summer is coming and so are all the races
that need volunteers to make them happen!
RC Southbank has a tradition of sending
Sprint Marshals to help with a variety of roles during these
competitions. This is not just a fantastic opportunity for our
Club to raise some money it is also a great Fellowship Event.
If you are an early starter (marshal duty
normally begins around 6am in the morning), enjoy sports and a
day out, this is the kind of activity to go for!
Please have a look at the dates below and
get in touch with
Richard if you are available
for any of them.

Christmas
Shopping and Fundraising
We have some great
ideas for you to combine the search for presents with helping
others.
WILL YOU HELP END POLIO THIS
CHRISTMAS?
Since 1985, ending polio has been Rotary’s top philanthropic goal.
Since then, polio cases have been slashed by 99 percent worldwide.
While most of the world is polio-free, this vaccine-preventable
disease still threatens children in parts of Africa and South
Asia.
You can help eradicate Polio throughout the world by purchasing a
Polio Challenge 1.2kg Rich Fruit Cake with 50% fruit. Proceeds
from the sale of this cake go to support the Rotary International
Polio Eradication Program.

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message
(Issue 21, 17 November 2008)
November is Foundation Month
"Why do we have a Foundation?"
I read
this week a most informative & sobering article from Callum
Thompson, Associate Editor, of “Our Foundation” which I would like
to share with you.
We have seen seismic changes in the world’s financial institution
in recent weeks as the so-called “credit crunch’ makes impact.
Banks that used to be the bedrock of our free market economy have
become increasingly weakened by the confidence crisis and
governments all over the world have been obliged to bail out the
financial institutions.
Jobs, Superannuation Schemes, Mortgages have all been affected as
has Charitable Foundations. The Rotary Foundation relies heavily
on the financial markets….
