President Gabe's Message

I attended a training session a couple of days ago with about 30 other lawyers. It was a training session in preparation to the opening of 3 new legal clinics around Melbourne. These are "specialist" clinics in that they target a particular group of clients. As pro bono clinics, they offer free services to clients if they are unable to obtain free legal assistance and are otherwise unable to pay for those services.
The clinics will service senior citizens. Primarily, it will provide legal services such as the drafting of wills and enduring powers of attorney. There may also be cases of elder abuse, financial abuse which the elderly person may be a victim of and are afraid to seek help or unable to seek help. Elder abuse is where an older person is in a relationship of trust with another person and ....

Last Week's Meeting

At last weeks meeting Ian Bjorkman & Roger Budd of the Lions Club of Wheelers Hill talked about the Lions Eye Health Program.
The Lions Eye Health Program is a community awareness program to prevent unnecessary vision impairment. Vision impairment costs Australia in the vicinity of AUD 1.8 billion per annum. Early intervention is key in order to reduce vision impairment, and symptoms are usually noticed when it is too late and damage has been done.
Those at risk are diabetes sufferers, over 50s, smokers, those with a family history, and those with high exposure to UV. If you or someone you know falls into one of these categories it is vitally important to have an eye check up at least every 2 years......

The Rotary Club of Williamstown
will hold a
Dinner Dance in the Williamstown Town Hall
on Saturday 28th February

to celebrate the 60th Anniversary
of it receiving its Charter from Rotary International in 1949.

RC Williamtown was chartered by the Rotary Club of Footscray and,  in turn, chartered the Rotary Clubs of Altona & Point Gellibrand.
They have a  proud record of serving others less fortunate than ourselves through a wide range of local, national and international projects and feel that they have much to celebrate and intend to do so in style.

The dinner dance will be a wonderful night of celebration, fine food and outstanding entertainment. Music will be provided by the Williamstown RSL Pipe Band, The Rathdowne Street Big Band and the popular Wendy Stapleton. We can assure you of a fun filled night for only $100 a head, all inclusive.
The evening will show case Rotary but is not just for Rotarians. It will be a community event with a wide cross section of people, including the Mayor of Hobsons Bay and DG Jim Studebaker & Carol attending.

Further details are available on the attached flyer. If you  would like to attend please contact Murray Verso, Yvonne Moon or Chris James before 20th February.

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message

(Issue 28, 02 February 2009)
February is World Understanding Month
"It's about having fun"

When asked why I joined Rotary, I used to reply that I joined Rotary ‘to have the opportunity to give back a little’ … ah yes, the ‘solid citizen’ answer which still resonates beautifully in some of the dustier corners of the demographic.
While that answer was certainly true, I suspect the real reason I joined Rotary was to HAVE FUN.
In fact, if Rotary wasn’t fun I’m sure that I’d be somewhere else.
In short … IF I didn’t enjoy going to my weekly Rotary meetings, IF I didn’t enjoy working with my fellow members at fundraising events, IF I didn’t enjoy working on humanitarian projects and IF I didn’t enjoy the great club and district fellowship activities …. I doubt that I would be a Rotarian now....
