President Gabe's
Message
In October last year we had
a stall at the RC Albert Park’s Book Fair to sell the Aussie Bush
Buddies books. The sale was a success, raising a few hundred
dollars. What caught my eye, though, were the uniform polo shirts
and caps members of RC Albert Park worn. They were distinctive, and
the wearers were easily recognised as members of RC Albert Park. I
am sure each of them worn those uniforms with pride and really made
them feel part of the team.
It does not just make members of a club feel good but more
importantly, it is advertisement for both Rotary and the club......

Last Week's
Meeting
We had a
good meeting with an enthusiastic bunch of members. Dean was very
warmly greeted by the club as we haven't seen him in a while.
We were running a bit late starting the meeting and after a few
quick announcements, sergeant Nick donned his blue/gold beanie
(Rotary colors?) and started fining people for various alleged
infringements of good taste and Nick sensibilities. This was
followed by an initial barrage of cross fines to Nick … and ended
with the same! Corporal Lyn was asleep at the job at the start but
once awaken, she was bouncing all over the place and no purse/wallet
were left unturned.......

Lit
Ups
for Rotary's 104th Birthday
A number of iconic landmarks, including the British
Parliament, the Colosseum, and the Sydney Opera House,
provided a dramatic backdrop for an equally dramatic message:
End Polio Now.
Those three words
--
Rotary's pledge to rid the world of the crippling childhood
disease -- were projected onto each structure’s exterior the
week of 23 February, the organization's 104th anniversary.
"By illuminating these historic landmarks with our pledge to
end polio, Rotary clubs are announcing to the world that we
will not stop until the goal is achieved," says Jonathan
Majiyagbe, Rotary Foundation trustee chair. "We hope people
everywhere will see these words, either in person or through
the media, and join with us and our partners in this historic
effort to rid the world of polio once and for all."
Read more about the celebration and look at pictures of
other Lit ups on the
Rotary Foundation Website.

Lions
Eye Health Program (LEHP)
At our meeting on Tuesday
February 3rd Ian Bjorkman & Mr. Rodger Bud
of the Lions Club of Wheelers Hill shared some interesting
information with us about the Lions Eye Health Program.
The Lions Eye Health Program is a community awareness program
to prevent unnecessary vision impairment. Vision impairment
costs Australia in the vicinity of AUD 1.8 billion per annum.
Early intervention is key in order to reduce vision
impairment, and symptoms are usually noticed when it is too
late and damage has been done.
The Board has decided to give our colleagues from the Lions
club some support with their program:
If you have any old spectacles you would like to donate
please bring them along to the next Club Meetings. Rhys
will collect them and hand them over to the Lions Club to be
used where needed.
(Read more about the LEHP program on Lions Website)

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message
(Issue 31, 23 February 2009)
February is World Understanding Month
"Extending the Hand of Friendship"
Whilst there is a very strong
focus right now on helping those affected by the devastating
bushfires in Victoria, let’s not forget that there is also another
devastating front impacting on many – the global recession.
As the news bombards us daily about cutbacks and job losses, a
number of Rotarians, including those who are employed, own their
own business or retired have very real concerns about the future.
Many Rotarians who have retired or are thinking of retirement with
sound share portfolios are finding that they are needing to
rethink their strategies as most of their funds have evaporated
with share prices collapsing. Not only does the continual news
about the ailing economy indicate potential difficulties in our
fundraising efforts, but it may also mean we need to think about
providing strategic, emotional or mentoring support to our own
fellow Rotarians. This is where we can really make a difference
... helping each other.......
