PROGRAM
Our Speaker at this weeks meeting is
Chris Watters, Chief Executive Officer of DrinkWise Australia,
an independent ‘ThinkTank’ jointly funded by the Federal government
and the Australian liquor industry. Prior to his appointment at DrinkWise, Chris was employed for 4 years as the Chief Executive of
Liquor Licensing, Queensland.
Mr. Watters is a lawyer by profession, having practiced in criminal
and public law as a Barrister in three Australian jurisdictions. He
has extensive experience in law enforcement, public policy and
regulation, including his recent management of a substantial
community education campaign targeting binge-drinking and the
secondary supply of alcohol to young people by their parents. Chris
led the 2007 review of the Queensland Liquor Act, and championed
Queensland’s indigenous alcohol reform program, resulting in the
“Strong Community Life” initiative.
He holds Bachelor degrees in Arts and Law and a Masters degree in
Public Administration from the University of Queensland, where he
lectured for 5 years in law and government. His present academic
interests include Australia’s drinking culture and sustainable
alcohol policy.
President Gabe's
Message
For a club
our size, we are very active and generous - but that doesn't just
happen. It requires each of us to make a conscious effort to make
it happen. Here are just some of the things we have already done
this Rotary year:
-
Sponsoring Donations in Kind
-
Supporting and sponsoring the
Royce Abbey Foundation (including the nomination of 2 Royce Abbey
Awardees)
-
Sponsoring 2 RYLA candidates
-
Supporting and sponsoring the
Homeless World Cup
-
Sponsoring 2 Lord Somers Camp
candidates
-
Sponsoring YAA for the 2009
calendar year
-
Sponsoring the RC Echuca Moama
back to school project
-
Supporting and sponsoring Rotary
International to meet the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation -
Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge which must be completed by 30
June 2012
-
Sponsoring the Australian
Afghanistan Development Organisation's (AADO) costs of
transporting a container of supplies to Afghanistan
-
Purchase of a ShelterBox
These activities have kept the club busy but they are not free.
Just the projects above cost the club over A$12,000. There are many
projects yet to be completed.......

Last Week's
Meeting
Dinner was announced by PP Wendy Bennett
The meeting was called to order at 18:30 by Sergeant-at Arms Nick
Kane who proposed the traditional toasts to “Australia” and
“Rotary International”.....
Our Chair for the evening Mandy Pearson
introduced our guest speaker Richard Randla.
Richard gave us a detailed presentation on Community Correctional
Services (CCS) in Victoria. This is an alternative to custodial
sentencing. I think that most members were surprised by the number
of prisons that are actually in Victoria. CCS takes many forms and
is tailored to the offender to best suit the needs of the
community......

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message
(Issue 34, 16 March 2009)
March is World Literacy Month
"Thanks and Congratulation"
Having been to over 40 District
Conferences Past Rotary International President Wilf Wilkinson is
somewhat of an expert on them; so when he commented that last
week’s conference was the ‘best ever’ I was delighted.
My sincere thanks and congratulations go to Greg Matthews,
Conference Chairman (yeah yeah) and the team from North Balwyn.
Their hard work certainly paid off.
Thanks to all of the speakers, each of who gave us further
understanding of our world today and what we can expect in the
years to come. Bernard Salt helped us understand the demographic
challenges facing Australian during the current economic downturn.
Robyn Moore, a great communicator who spoke on changing people’s
perceptions through words and Lena Condos of her passion for
humanitarian projects and the wonderful ‘Eyes Wide Open’
program.......
