PROGRAM
Our Guest speaker at this
meeting will be Angelo Capuano, the outgoing Ambassadorial
Scholar of DS9800. He will leave for the UK shortly.
Angelo is currently an Associate to Justice Gray at the
Federal Court of Australia.
Ambassadorial Scholarships, The Rotary Foundation's oldest and
best-known program, was founded in 1947. Since then, nearly 38,000
men and women from about 100 nations have studied abroad under its
auspices. Today it is the world's largest privately funded
international scholarships program.
Read more about this exciting program on the
Rotary International Website
Please
note, that on May 19th we will join the Rotary Club of Glenferrie at their
location in Hawthorn. The special guest speaker that night will be Gemma Sisia, founder of the School of Jude in Tanzania.
President Gabe's
Message
As I write this note, ANZAC Day approaches. On ANZAC Day, we
remember the sacrifice, including the ultimate sacrifice, that each
soldier has made to protect this wonderful country of ours,
Australia. What they gave was, of course, not given to us
individually but each of us have benefited and continues to benefit
from their sacrifices. We remember them, honor them and recognize
the contribution they have made to improve our lives.
Theirs' is the spirit of service and contribution to the community.
Theirs' is the dedication to do what is necessary so that others can
live in peace. Theirs' is the determination to help others whilst
putting themselves at risk.
It seems to me that there is much in common between the ideals of
Rotary and the ideals of the servicemen and servicewomen of this
great land.....

If you’re in the leadership group it will give you an
opportunity to learn of what’s new in Rotary from the various
district chairs.
It’s also great for fellowship, not just within our own club but
with members from other clubs AND
it can help us to showcase Southbank.

of $30 per head will be paid by the club.
For those of you who can't make it perhaps you can join us for
some fellowship (a glass of wine or coffee in Carlton) following

Rotary Australia World Community Service Ltd
(RAWCS)
RAWCS Fundraising Walks.
After the inaugural RAWCS fundraising walk last year on Kokoda the
interest is to extend the opportunity for further participation.
RAWCS are pleased to announce two walks and encourage Rotarians,
family members and friends of Rotary to give consideration to
being part of this opportunity.
Walk 1. KOKODA 2009-K2
13th September 2009 – 24th September 2009.
Owens Corner to Kokoda
The walk traces the steps of the Australian Forces through the
Owen Stanley Range and honours the handful of 18 year old militia
troops who stood between the enemy onslaught and our homeland.
Most of the diggers had not previously fired a shot in anger.

Leader: PDG Bob Sydes (03 6344959)

Walk 2. SANDAKAN DEATH MARCH – S1
30th April 2010 – 11th May 2010
This
walk gives the option of walking all the way, part walk part bus
or all the way using bus transport so caters for all fitness
levels.
The
Sandakan – Ranau POW Death March follows in the footsteps of the
POWs who were force-marched three times between January and June
1945 from their prisoner of war camp in Sandakan camp North
Borneo, west to the small settlement of Ranau. The very mention of
the words Sandakan/Ranau in tandem conjures visions of tragedy of
immense proportions. The Death March is acknowledged as the worst
tragedy for Australia in World War II.
Team
Leader PDG Lou Johnson (03 63445014)

Further information refer to site

Registrations for both walks are to be lodged with Lou Johnson
(details above).

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message
(Issue 39, 20 April 2009)
April is Rotary Magazine Month
"Fellowship the Vital Force"
Membership, the Life Blood
of our Organisation
Paul Harris called together three friends for the original Rotary
meeting in 1905 because he wanted to create, in a big and bustling
city, something of a friendly atmosphere, reminiscent of the small
town where he grew up. One of the components of such an atmosphere
is friendship. Since the very first meeting friendship – or
fellowship, as it is called at Rotary – has been a prime
motivating force.
The degree of fellowship in a club depends largely on the culture
of the club and attitude of the members. Are the members friendly
to new comers? Are they easy to talk to? Are they interested in
their community? A warm and welcoming atmosphere goes a long way
in determining the strength of any Rotary Club.......
