A Note from the President
As I write
this note, ANZAC Day approaches. On ANZAC Day, we remember the
sacrifice, including the ultimate sacrifice, that each soldier
has made to protect this wonderful country of ours, Australia.
What they gave was, of course, not given to us individually but
each of us have benefited and continues to benefit from their
sacrifices. We remember them, honour them and recognise the
contribution they have made to improve our lives.
Theirs' is the spirit of service and contribution to the
community. Theirs' is the dedication to do what is necessary so
that others can live in peace. Theirs' is the determination to
help others whilst putting themselves at risk.
It seems to me that there is much in common between the ideals of
Rotary and the ideals of the servicemen and servicewomen of this
great land. Of course, the tools we use are quite different, but
the objective is similar. We aim to serve the community; we
promote peace and we give "service above self".
Naturally, Rotarians are much less likely to be in physical danger
and in this sense, the sacrifice of our ANZACs for our community
will always be more significant. In another sense, the task and
challenge before each Rotarian is no less real or immediate. It is
so easy for us to care maybe just a little bit less, or believe
that we are not important in the Family of Rotary.
The truth is that it takes determination and courage to be part of
Rotary - to continue to serve the community. Through family, work
or other pressures, we can easily be distracted. It is easy to
think that our help is not needed in the community or in our own
club. This is never true, there is always something we can do,
someone we can help.
As we remember the ANZACs, let us draw strength from their courage
so that we too can serve our community, as Rotarians.
Yours in Rotary,
Gabe
