President Gabe's
Message
May is Australian Rotary Health Research Month, so let's find out
about the Australian Rotary Health.
The objective of Australian Rotary Health (ARH) is to raise funds
which are granted to worthy research projects in the areas of
medicine and health. Major projects are intended to be funded by
grants over several years to ensure continuity. ARH sponsors
researches that are urgently needed by the community health but are
otherwise neglected, thus providing a valuable service to the
community. Therefore, ARH uses a more encompassing concept of
“health”, with a wider vision which includes all aspects of
community health.
ARH aims to fund research projects with a strong applied research
component so that the outcomes may be applied, either by individual
Rotary clubs or otherwise back to the community. Thus, the cycle is
complete: community donates to ARH and Rotary clubs that fund the
research projects which produces results that can be applied in the
community which provided the funds......

Last Week's
Meeting
....Our Guest speaker at this meeting was
Angelo Capuano, the outgoing Ambassadorial Scholar of DS9800. He
will leave for the UK shortly.
Angelo is currently an Associate to Justice Gray at the
Federal Court of Australia.
Angelo gave us a wide ranging presentation on his career to date, a
background on international legal systems and what he hopes to
achieve during his time as a scholar at Oxford University.
Andrew arrived as a young child with his migrant family and settled
in Altona. He was diagnosed with a sight deficiency (keratoconus) at
13 which started to awaken his thinking in relation to the treatment
of people with disabilities of various sorts
He has obtained his legal qualifications and taught at Victoria
University prior to obtaining his present position as an Associate
to the Federal Court.
His personal efforts have been focused on improving access for
people with disabilities to the legal system and in the areas of

Rotary Australia World Community Service Ltd
(RAWCS)
RAWCS Fundraising Walks.
After the inaugural RAWCS fundraising walk last year on Kokoda the
interest is to extend the opportunity for further participation.
RAWCS are pleased to announce two walks and encourage Rotarians,
family members and friends of Rotary to give consideration to
being part of this opportunity.
Walk 1. KOKODA 2009-K2
13th September 2009 – 24th September 2009.
Owens Corner to Kokoda
The walk traces the steps of the Australian Forces through the
Owen Stanley Range and honours the handful of 18 year old militia
troops who stood between the enemy onslaught and our homeland.
Most of the diggers had not previously fired a shot in anger.

Leader: PDG Bob Sydes (03 6344959)

Walk 2. SANDAKAN DEATH MARCH – S1
30th April 2010 – 11th May 2010
This
walk gives the option of walking all the way, part walk part bus
or all the way using bus transport so caters for all fitness
levels.
The
Sandakan – Ranau POW Death March follows in the footsteps of the
POWs who were force-marched three times between January and June
1945 from their prisoner of war camp in Sandakan camp North
Borneo, west to the small settlement of Ranau. The very mention of
the words Sandakan/Ranau in tandem conjures visions of tragedy of
immense proportions. The Death March is acknowledged as the worst
tragedy for Australia in World War II.

Leader PDG Lou Johnson (03 63445014)

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message
(Issue 40, 27 April 2009)
April is Rotary Magazine Month
"It's Coming.
Prepare...Prepare...Prepare..."
How the year moves on ….
Certainly, one of the salutary events in the Rotary year is the
two-day Presidents Elect Training Seminar (PETS). In many ways, it
is the key gathering … the one that draws from our past and looks
to assuring our future structure.
Our PETS is Rotary from every conceivable angle – it touches on
philosophy, psychology and multitude of organisational components.
For the incoming presidents it is an intense session with a steep
learning curve. But, importantly, it is also an event that engages
fellowship and produces individual cross-club presidential
friendships which often become life-long.
Last weekend saw the culmination of many months of planning and
preparation as presidents-elect and partners went through an
intensive and fun filled D9800 PETS in ‘celsius challenged”
Ballarat. I jest …. Ballarat was great and the hospitality and
fellowship that emanated from the weekend points to an exciting
time in 2009/10........
