A Note from the President

May is Australian Rotary Health Research Month, so let's find out about the Australian Rotary Health.
The objective of Australian Rotary Health (ARH) is to raise funds which are granted to worthy research projects in the areas of medicine and health. Major projects are intended to be funded by grants over several years to ensure continuity. ARH sponsors researches that are urgently needed by the community health but are otherwise neglected, thus providing a valuable service to the community. Therefore, ARH uses a more encompassing concept of “health”, with a wider vision which includes all aspects of community health.
ARH aims to fund research projects with a strong applied research component so that the outcomes may be applied, either by individual Rotary clubs or otherwise back to the community. Thus, the cycle is complete: community donates to ARH and Rotary clubs that fund the research projects which produces results that can be applied in the community which provided the funds.

Current areas of research include research in:

  • “cot death”

  • mental health of young persons

  • childhood cancer

  • youth suicide

  • Parkinson disease

  • dementia

  • rural health

How does it work? Donations from Rotary clubs, Rotarians and non-Rotarians are made to the ARH. The Board of ARH, on advice of the Research Committee, determines the areas of research to be funded. Applications are assessed by the Research Committee (consisting of eleven eminent medical professionals, the Chairman and the CEO) which then makes a recommendation to the Board. The Board then decides on the researches to be funded.

How you can help?

  • Donations – bequests, Friends of the Fund, Companion or Research Companion

  • Promotional Items – including bags, caps, Great Australian Bike Ride, ARH polo shirts, Christmas cards, Health Research Roses, Love Living (home ware products).

Andrew arrived as a young child with his migrant family and settled in Altona. He was diagnosed with a sight deficiency (keratoconus) at 13 which started to awaken his thinking in relation to the treatment of people with disabilities of various sorts

He has obtained his legal qualifications and taught at Victoria University prior to obtaining his present position as an Associate to the Federal Court.

His personal efforts have been focused on improving access for people with disabilities to the legal system and in the areas of industrial relations and Commercial Law in particular and mainly in the Western suburbs of Melbourne.

President’s thoughts for the week

First. Never eat moving food in a cafeteria

Second If you have not achieved good grades then hand your report card to your mother whilst she is on the phone
