MEETING 483- Tuesday 19 May

This meeting of the Rotary Club of Southbank is a joined meeting with the Rotary Club of Glenferrie at their location in Hawthorn.

As guests needed to be pre registered to organise this meeting, please contact Clubservices to find out if you can come along as last minute visitor.

PROGRAM

The special guest speaker that night will be Gemma Sisia, director and founder of the School of St. Jude in Tanzania who is currently touring around Australia to promote their program.

In 2002 a young lady, Gemma Rice (now Gemma Sisia), from a sheep farm in Australia, opened a small school in Northern Tanzania with the help of her family, friends and local Rotary Club. What started with only a handful of children and one teacher is now a thriving school of 1151 children, 130 teachers and 200 staff. In January 2008 another free primary school with an initial enrolment of over 550 children opened. These schools really have the potential to influence the quality of Tanzania's future leaders.

Read more about the School of Jude on their website and follow Gemma's Tour on Twitter.

President Gabe's Message

Gaby joined us as our newest member and we all wish her a wonderful Rotary experience in our club.
Introducing and inducting a new member into Rotary is not just important to the health of a Rotary club, the health of Rotary International. Indeed, that is not the reason why we want people to join Rotary. We ask people to join Rotary because that act of asking someone to join is, in itself, a community service. We are asking prospective members to join so they can help us better serve the community. We offer them, in return, an opportunity to serve the community in the unique Rotary way - by offering our fellowship, our ideals of service and, of course, our friendship. It is arguably more important for us to find new members than to do projects ourselves, because we only have one pair of hands but there is no limit to how many others you can bring to help do Rotary's good work.....

Last Week's Meeting

The theme of this meeting was the Victorian Bushfires.
Mev Connell gave us an update of the multi district Rotary Bushfire fundraising efforts.....
President Gabe presented a cheque of $39,300 from DS9800 to Matthew Stephens, CEO of the KIDS Foundation Burn Survivor network to support their Camp Phoenix, a special camp that will be attended by 30 families affected by burns from the bush fires.
Kevin Love, Deputy Secretary of Land Stewardship & Biodiversity for the Department of Sustainability and Environment (as well as an active Rotarian from the RC of Central Melbourne) gave us an informative insight into the Victorian Bushfires and “Black Saturday” covering the role of  DSE and the other authorities involved in the whole fire-fighting effort.....

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message

(Issue 42, 11 May 2009)
May is Australian Rotary Health Research Month

"Continuing to Support Bushfire Recovery
"

It is important to bring our clubs and members up to date with what has been happening with our involvement in the bushfire recovery program and where we are heading.
Earlier this week, our D9800 Bushfire Recovery Chairman Mev Connell, PP Greg Matthews of the RC North Balwyn and I visited the townships of Marysville and Kinglake and met with volunteer organisations in both towns to discuss ways in which our Rotary District may assist with helping the recovery efforts in those two badly affected areas. The following are extracts of a report written by Mev Connell last week........
