PROGRAM
Our Speakers at next weeks meeting will be
Steve Nicolls and Paul Roberts from
Seeing Eye Dogs Australia.
Seeing Eye Dogs Australias
mission is
"To enhance the mobility and independence of people who are blind or
vision impaired throughout Australia by providing Seeing Eye Dogs,
mobility training and rehabilitation services free of charge."
Currently in Australia there
are 480,000 people aged over 40 with considerable vision impairment
and 50,000 of these are legally blind. Over the next 15 years this
number will almost double.
Steve has been using Seeing
Eye dogs for the past 10 years so he knows first hand of the
wonderful change a dog makes to a persons life.
Hear about how he received
the diagnosis of his eye condition and the resultant struggles that
he faced. Then what lead him to the life changing decision to get a
Seeing Eye dog and the profound difference this made. Learn the
amazing things he discovered that a Seeing Eye dog can do for
someone.
President Gabe's
Message
The Rotary
Foundation, our very own charity, have always provided grants to
Rotary clubs, including District Simplified Grants, Multi-Year and
Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships; Rotary Grants for University
Teachers; Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants; Volunteer
Service Grants; and Disaster Recovery Grants, just to name a few.
The Foundation is considering streamlining the grants process and is
putting in place a Future Vision Plan. In short, the Future Vision
Plan is a pilot project to combine all Foundation grants into 2
categories: Rotary Foundation District Grants and Rotary Foundation
Global Grants. A 3 year pilot program will be conducted starting
from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2013. After the pilot, the Future Vision
Plan will be implemented worldwide....

Last Week's
Meeting
At last week's meeting members and guests Clinton, Aurora and Judy
had the chance to listen to Barbara Harrison's adventures with
meerkats in the Kalahari desert.
Looking
at beautiful photographs (hard to believe that they where taken with
a "cheap camera") featuring these funny animals and the breathtaking
landscape we all could get a taste of what it must be like to be an
Earthwatch Volunteer Traveller......

DG Jim Studebaker's Weekly Message
(Issue 44, 25 May 2009)
May is Australian Rotary Health Research Month
"How Can We Improve The Gender Balance In
Our Clubs?"
In my message last week, I reported on the
findings of the RI Membership Development Division following focus
group studies of Rotarians for the purpose of gathering
information to better encourage women to become Rotarians.
Rotary International reported that 85% of Rotarians are male and
15% female so it is important that we do everything we can to
improve our gender mix. This week we look at ways we can improve
the gender balance in all of our clubs.
The focus group participants were asked to consider the
opportunities available to clubs as a result of increasing women’s
participation and best practices for recruiting women.......
