President Philip's Weekly Message
As you
know, August is Membership & Extension Month and we have a great
opportunity next Tuesday to bring along potential new members to
experience Southbank, as we induct two new members. Have a think
about your networks and who we could approach to join us. Friends
and family are also welcome on the night.
Last
Tuesday was a great night of fun and fellowship! Thanks to all
those who came along to the laser skirmish and ten pin bowling
night and a special thanks to Gordon and his Club Service team for
organising it. Chris Chalwell, the Western Region Chief Operating
Office for the Skilled Group, joined me on the evening and had
fantastic time. There will be more details about the evening in
the Scribe’s notes.
On 1st
September, we have a film evening on East Timor, the details of
which will be in next week’s Bulletin. It is the 10th
anniversary of Timor Leste’s independence and an important event
that we should all support.
Have a
good week everyone!
Philip Archer
Club President 2009-2010
Last Week's Meeting
(Thank you to Gordon for these
beaut scribe notes)
Meeting 495 Scribe Notes
A fabulous
evening was enjoyed by all that attended.
President
Philip used the evening as a Team Building for his company The
Archway Group with seven of his company contacts coming along. He
even brought along a valued customer who I might add enjoyed himself
mightily.
The Laser
Skirmish was strongly and noisily contested and Philip’s customer
Chris Chalwell was amazed at how quiet, shy Rotarians turned into
serious commandos. It was difficult to ascertain who won however I
can say everyone enjoyed themselves including your humble scribe.
We then
proceeded to complete two game of 10 Pin Bowling along with some
drinks and snacks. Ex-Sergeant at Arms Nick played on two teams and
no doubt his Hockey training came into play. He was however a
lather of perspiration at the end of the night.
Our now
frequent visitor (and hopefully a membership candidate) Ivory
Roberts was seen to be enjoying herself.
The winning
team was led by Jamie Anderson our nominee to the District 9800 GSE
Team to Sweden. Your humble (but proud) scribe was a member.
Although they
did not take part in the games PP Wendy and Bobbi were along to give
us moral support.
Awards at the
end of the night were as follows:
President’s
Award – to Kyle Kovacsics, the eight year old who represented the
most potential for Rotary.
Membership
Director’s Award – Nick Kane for his involvement with two team at
Ten Pin Bowling.
Club Service
Director’s Award – to Stuart McArthur for losing his number one
rating.
Webmaster’s
Award – to Margy van Bree, a guest who thrashed him on the day.
Please
mark our next Fellowship Evening in your diaries:
We will be attending the SALVADOR DALI: LIQUID DESIRE exhibit
at the NGV on Wednesday 30th September. This promises to
be a quieter event but great fun never the less.

Tell us about those important to
you:

Family and friends mean
the world to me.
Tell us something that most people don’t know about you?
I'm learning Dutch at the CAE on Monday nights.
Complete the following:
If you’re
going to a drink, your favourite drink is ...
A nice red wine or a chai latte...depending on
my mood at the time.
The last book I read was ... The
Book Thief ... and it was ... fantastic - highly recommended
My favourite movie is ...
Dead Poet's Society ... because ... it
shows the positive impact that one person can make on many.
The biggest misconception about me is ...
that university students get great holidays. I
wish!
Happiness is ... bliss.
Before I joined Southbank I thought Rotary was ...
a bunch of old men in suits eating bad
food (hey, I experienced Rotary in the UK) and discussing business,
golf and Christmas collections
... but since joining
Southbank I think ...
Rotary is much more contemporary and has great
potential to achieve so much more.
I joined The Rotary Club of Southbank
because ...
I heard that it was a younger club and that
women had more than a token presence.
The Club member I would least like to be stuck next to on a long
flight would be ... I'm
sure that all club members would be delightful flight companions
... because ...
People should see me professionally if ...
they want to find out more about Allied Health.
My favourite quote is ...
Carpe Diem!
Rotary Foundation
Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought
is about Matching Grants.
Rotary Clubs in Wisconsin, USA created the Power Flour Action
Network to make an impact on the lives of infants and severely
malnourished children and adults. Power Flour has targeted
malnourished populations in 65 countries to date, providing a very
small amount of barley malt flour to cooked starchy staples, such as
rice, wheat or maize. The supplement helps digest the starch,
converting it into sugars the body can absorb quickly and easily.
The sugars power the body so that it can grow and function. A
Matching Grant from The Rotary Foundation has enabled Rotarians in
Wisconsin to bring Power Flour to children in orphanages and
feeding programs in Panama. Rotarians in the Rotary del Norte club
in Panama will carry out the distribution and training in Panama to
reach up to 10,000 children in the first year. Members of the
Sturgeon Bay, WI, USA club are now working to develop a commercial
model for Power Flour so that it will become self-sustaining.
Every Rotarian, Every Year – Nourishing bodies and minds.
