OUR VISION

A club that is enterprising, caring and productive. Developing fellowship and implementing activities rich in choice, for the benefit of our community.

Meeting 501 - 22 September 2009

President Philip's Weekly Message

Thank you to everyone who helped out and participated in our 500th meeting celebration.  It truly was a great evening and I was chuffed that comment was made by our visiting District dignitaries that Southbank has such a wonderful culture and runs a very interesting and engaging meeting.  Well done to all those who made it extra special.

This week we held our second Business Breakfast with guest speaker Peter Court, Founder and CEO of Streetscope Research.  Peter gave us a fascinating insight to the direction of both individual and corporate social responsibility that resulted in much animated discussion at each table.  A number of guests present from small to medium sized enterprises were enthused about how they could incorporate some form of corporate social responsibility into their business strategy.  I know I believe that we as a Club provide an excellent vehicle through which corporate, government and media can meet community to do good in the world.

This weekend saw the start of the “Know Your Numbers” campaign at the Royal Melbourne Show and in just two days, I have witnessed the incredible impact of this project as a very large number of people who had their blood pressure taken were alerted to a potential health risk.  Thank you to all the volunteers who have helped out on the stand and have put in some long hours to make this a real success.  This has been a fantastic project where the hands-on work of Rotarians has really made a difference to many people’s future health and wellbeing.

The notes from the Business Breakfast will be available on the website later this week, and at Tuesday’s meeting I am looking forward to our Directors and Project Champions present their reports to the Club.  I am also looking forward to inducting Catherine Morales, our 4th new member for the year.

Have a sensational week.

Philip Archer
Club President 2009-2010

Last Week's Meeting

(Thank you to Mandy for these magnificent notes)

Meeting 500 Scribe Notes

We had a great turn up at our special meeting No 500 with the theme being family and friends.

It was lovely to be able to induct Ivory Roberts as a new member on this night and it was even more special for Ivory as she had so many of her family there including her Grandparents.  The third induction for the  new year so at this rate we will have a new record if we keep those numbers up.

Our thoughts went out to Wendy Bennett whose mother is not well at the moment and Wendy we are all thinking of you and your Family.

A reminder about Salvador Dali Art after Dark night at the Gallery instead of our regular Tuesday evening meeting.  This evening will take place on Wed 30th Sept 2009.  You need to reply to Bobbi.

We had a display of how to take blood pressure for those on the Rotary stand at The Melbourne Show with Leigh Harry feeling rather faint after a hard day at the office with Miss Barbara keeping him under control!

We had lots of distinguished Rotary visitors there from our District 9800 with a special talk from our District Governor on the focus this year on how to keep current members  stimulated and the importance of encouraging new members as this is the key to  the  future of Rotary.  The night concluded with a magnificent cake to celebrate with all our past presidents up on the rostrum.

Southbank Profile

Name: Charles Stuart

Tell us about those important to you:   My daughter, son and grandchildren. I am very lucky to have a son who is trying very hard to keep me in the manner to which I would like to become accustomed and a daughter who brings me down to earth.

Tell us something that most people don’t know about you?  I am a qualified ships officer and commercial pilot.

Complete the following:

If you’re going to a drink, your favourite drink is ... A very good single malt.

The last book I read was ... Conn Iggulden’s  “Gods of War ... and it was ... My favourite is “Wind in the willows” because I went to school near “ the wild, wild woods” and ‘Ratty’s boat house”.

My favourite movie is ... The “Castle” ... because ... it is an iconic movie and I have a house in Bonnie Doon.

The biggest misconception about me is ...

Happiness is ... Sitting with my family on a beach in Fiji.

Before I joined Southbank I thought Rotary was ... I knew it was a bunch of old people because I was a member of the RC of Mansfield. Actually, a very good way to get to know the locals in a country town ...  but since joining Southbank I think ... I am very impressed by how the younger generations are becoming involved in this dynamic club.

I joined The Rotary Club of Southbank because ... so that Rhys would no longer be the oldest member.

The Club member I would least like to be stuck next to on a long flight would be ... Rhys ... because ... if you had sat next to him on aircraft as often as I have over decades, you wouldn’t want to either.

People should see me professionally if ... they have fear of flying. I can probably make it worse.

My favourite quote is ...The follies which a man regrets most in his life are those he didn’t commit when he had the opportunity.

Rotary Foundation Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Club Goal Setting.

Clubs are asked to set annual giving goals for the Every Rotarian, Every Year effort. We’re asking every Rotarian to support our Foundation with a minimum US$100 contribution. At the President-elect Training Seminar (PETS) this spring, our club president-elect will be asked to submit an annual giving goal for the upcoming year. History has proven that clubs that set goals follow through with them. Many clubs are exceeding that goal now. "We decided to try for a total of $600,000 or $200 per capita in our district," says PDG Holly Callen, D5950. "It seemed like a real stretch and it took us three years to get there, but by setting an ambitious goal, we were able to achieve it. This year we have raised the goal to $1million - $300 per Rotarian!" As our club sets its goal for the coming year, we should also remember to measure our success by the number of lives we’ve saved and changed.
