Meeting 502 - 30 September 2009

President Philip's Weekly Message

We are now at the end of the first quarter for this year.  I am very interested to receive feedback and/or ideas you may have on how we are going as a Club.  Please feel free to speak to me or email me about your thoughts.  If you are experiencing any particular challenges or difficulties concerning your involvement with Rotary, please talk to either me or Gabe Hau.

So that we can achieve good outcomes this year, it is important that everyone becomes active and participates in projects.  If there is an Avenue of Service or particular project in which you have a passion, please speak with the relevant Service Director or project champion.  Also, if you are interested in fundraising, or have ideas about Club Service, please speak to Gordon Hastie, our Club Service Director.

On a final note, thanks to all who have given whole-heartedly to the “Know Your Numbers” campaign and the Royal Melbourne Show project.  This has proven to be a great success.

Have a sensational week.

Philip Archer
Club President 2009-2010

Last Week's Meeting

(Thank you to Charles Stuart for these superb notes)

Meeting 501 Scribe Notes

The meeting this week was smaller than usual. We had had a few recent meetings which were attended by large numbers of guests. This time we were almost on our own.

Charles Dimmick took over as Sergeant (pending the delayed arrival of Chris Trueman) and did an excellent job getting proceedings underway.

There was no guest speaker as this meeting was for the presentation of Director’s reports.  Unfortunately the lack of a quorum had seen the cancellation of the Board meeting which has been rescheduled.  However some reports, to be tabled at the rescheduled Board meeting, were presented.

Clinton Wong, standing in for Bettina Harlos gave a report Community/International service projects.

Trivia Night for Camp Phoenix facilitated by Richard Clark completed on Monday 24th August 2009.  Received fantastic feedback from Wendy Bennett and Catherine Morales about their experience being camp buddies at the Burn Survivor Unit's Camp Phoenix.

Kids Foundation – 2 board members have been appointed with another potential board member soon to be approved.

Kids Foundation - Follow up with the founder about developing a stronger partnership in addition with The Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

Know Your Numbers campaign - Royal Melbourne Show (Sept 17 – 27, 2009)

Project Champions Gabrielle Halpin, Charles Dimmick and Steven Aquillina had organised volunteers to assist with the Know your numbers campaign in partnership with RC Canterbury.

Already we have received fantastic feedback from visitors who have advised they didn’t realise their blood pressure was so high and due to this they have been referred to a doctor.

Wendy Bennett had donated 4000 Children's books for the Royal Melbourne Show.

Yarra Glen Community Fire Relief – Rotary District 9800’s Bushfire Recovery Fund. A Grant application funding submitted for the purchase of 10 shipping containers. Grant application and funding submitted on behalf of the RC of Huon valley – D9830 and RC Southbank - D9800 for playground equipment at the Yarra Glen Recovery Centre.

Gaby Abelskamp and Charles Dimmick reported on their experiences at the show and how well the stand was received.

Tracey Browne reported that she and husband Ross had attended Great Tasting Experience Stand which she said was a great experience.

Gordon Hastie reported on Club Service. Fellowship Evening 30/09/2009, looks like being well attended.

Bettina & Stuart have completed all stages of the Rotary Leadership Institute.

President Philip reported that he attended the Royal Melbourne Show stand almost every day and confirmed, with enthusiasm, how well it was going. He also indicated how he was trying to get companies to join with us in Corporate Responsibility ventures. He also expanded on the use of the containers for the Yarra Glen fund. They would be used as ‘lockups’ on properties for storage of tools furniture etc.

Sergeant Trueman then took over for his usual and interesting fine session.

Another new member was also inducted. Catherine Morales who was supported by her friend Sarah Sawyer. Welcome Catherine.

Finally the meeting was closed by President Philip with one of his usual strange sayings.  Unfortunately this scribe forgot to write it down.

Rotary Foundation Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Rotary’s Disaster Recovery efforts.

Pakistani Rotarians are bringing education back into the lives of those in Pakistan and India affected by the earthquake of 2005. In Azad Kashmir more than 80% of the schools were either completely destroyed or badly damaged. The local Disaster Recovery Committee in Pakistan decided to focus its efforts on rebuilding schools. They will help rebuild five new, environmentally-friendly schools equipped with electricity, running water, bathroom facilities, and furniture and school supplies. Children and families throughout Azad Kashmir will be profoundly impacted by the efforts of Pakistani Rotarians.

Every Rotarian, Every Year – Working together to make life better – for Everyone!
