Meeting 503 - 6 October 2009

President Philip's Weekly Message

During the past week I met with the Yarra Glen Bushfire Recovery Centre to discuss two projects for which we have received a grant.  These being:

1.       The purchase of 10 X 20 ft containers, which will be lent to families who are rebuilding.  The containers will be used to store tools and building materials during the rebuilding phase, then lent to other families whilst they are rebuilding.  Once the rebuilding for all families has been completed, we can then sell off the containers as a fund-raiser.

2.      The building of an indoor play area at Yarra Glen for kids whose parents are attending to insurance and other personal/business matters.  This project is in conjunction with the Rotary Clubs of Hampton and Huon Valley in Tasmania.  Rhys Maggs and I will be going to Yarra Glen next week to finalise plans.  We are also looking at staging an opening of the play area on December 13th in the form of a Christmas party for the local people.

I am mindful that we have a lot of projects both in an active stage, as well as in the pipeline.  It is not possible to move forward with everything at one time and so we need to be patient with some of our projects, and undertake only those that are within our means.  As we build our membership and have the necessary resources, we can then embark on other planned projects.  A case in point is the magazine, which is on hold until February, but rest assured this will be going ahead and we have sponsorship support to meet its financial needs.

Have a sensational week.

Rotary Foundation Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about the generosity and dedication of our Foundation Alumni.

Former Rotary Peace Fellow from Norway Gert Danielsen, out of a desire to give something back, pledged to donate US$1,000 every year for the rest of his life to the Rotary Centers program and challenged other peace fellows to do the same. Inspired by Danielsen’s generosity, Peace Fellow Scott Lang of the United States took up the challenge and also pledged $1,000 annually. "My challenge and support reflects a keen desire to give back to the Rotary family now that I am able to do so," Danielsen says. "Giving a gift annually that I know will inspire Rotarians and others to give more and provide peace-building opportunities for even more people is a huge privilege to me." The commitment made by these two Foundation Alumni is a true testament to the quality of the Peace Fellows and the Rotary Centers program.
