President Philip's Weekly Message

It was great to have Andrew Chappell as our guest speaker last Tuesday.  He was very informative and there is no doubt Andrew and his team will be great partners in helping us to establish the Rotary Club of Southbank’s Giving Trust.  I am sure our Scribe’s notes will be very detailed about Andrew’s talk, but this is the link to the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Fund website where you can find all the information you need to understand this more:  http://www.lordmayorsfund.org.au/

This week I am looking forward to the RYLA team’s presentation and our inaugural Friends of Rotary meeting.  As you are aware, Friends of Rotary will be a valuable aid to the hands-on aspects of our project work and we should do all we can to welcome them and encourage their involvement.

For catering purposes, please let Narina know by emailing meetings@rotary.to of any guests you are bringing this week.

Have a great week in Rotary and I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday!

President Philip

Last Week's Meeting

(Andrew Chappell)

Meeting 516 Scribe Notes

Charles Dimmick was acting sergeant and did a fabulous job of it.  He was quick to remind us that he is incoming Treasurer.  Just this taste of his skills enough to put us all on notice that Charles is going to bring the skills of his employer to bear next year and we'd better be prepared to open our wallets/purses/bank accounts/investment portfolios (only for the super rich among us, of course) next year to do good in the world!

Charles also shared some stories about coming to Melbourne and how he is enjoying being here and grateful that he did decide to come.  Well, the club is certainly glad that Charles has come to work in Melbourne so that he is now a member of this happy family of Rotary!

We had a wonderful guest speaker last week in Andrew Chappell, CEO of the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation (LMCF).  Andrew is no stranger to our club and has attended a number of our functions including the recent Christmas Party.  He graciously accepted our last minute invitation to speak to the club and I think all those present would agreed that we are very appreciative of his presentation to us.

Before joining the LMCF 4 years ago, Andrew has worked in both the corporate environment (Telstra) and the non-profit sector (Alannah and Madeleine Foundation).  The switch from the corporate sector to the non-profit sector gave Andrew an opportunity to establish many new contacts and tap into the field of charity which is very different from the corporate world.

LMCF will this year grant more than $10 million to over 450 charities throughout Victoria.

Form its beginnings in 1923 when it was founded by Sir John Swanson's personal donation of £500, with a short-term objective of providing funds for Melbourne's post-war hospital needs.  But Sir John had a far grander design in mind.  He sought to provide hospitals with a steady stream of income with a more co-ordinated approach which enabled the hospitals to plan ahead.  In the following year, the scope of the LMCF was extended to charities beyond medical institutions.  Appeals such as the Hospital Saturday Appeal, Hospital Sunday Appeal and the Flower Day were all part of the fundraising activities of the Fund.  The LMCF supports a wide range of causes, including the 1939 and the 2009 bushfires, the recent tsunami in Asia and it has recently determined that it will place a focus on homelessness.

The LMCF is currently working with our club on a number of projects, including the setting up of our RC Southbank Trust and other events, including those involving work helping those experiencing homelessness.

Andrew told me after the meeting that he was a bit concerned because he didn't plan his presentation thoroughly.  His concerns were totally unnecessary as his presentation was relaxed, interesting and genuine and generated a lot of interest and questions from the floor.

Rotary Foundation Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about a matching grant that has helped turn waste into profit for Philippine coconut farmers.

With the aid of a Foundation matching grant, the Livelihood Project gives local farmers the supplies and labor to turn wasted coconut husks into "coconets", which have environmental and economic benefits for the community. The project increased employment levels for women and out of school youth while reviving the local coconut industry. Coconut husks, which are a huge source of agricultural waste, are now used to make coconets which help provide an environmentally friendly solution to land erosion and degradation. Another husk byproduct, coconut dust is used as a soil enhancer and organic fertilizer. This is an example of how The Rotary Foundation is helping smaller communities throughout the world and is ensuring that economic growth reaches the poorer communities.
