President Philip's Weekly Message

As you all know, we are now well into the final stages of actioning the Community Service Awards.  We’ve decided on seven award categories, being homelessness, youth services, the environment, mental health, community leadership, emergency services and vocational support.  Any help you can bring to the Community Service Awards team in encouraging a group active in one of these areas, or a philanthropic foundation or corporate interested in sponsoring one of these categories, please bring this to the attention of Steven McInnes.

Next week we are visiting the Rotary Club of Docklands en masse in lieu of our normal meeting.  Our Club Service Director, Gordon Hastie, and Narina have organised a fun evening with them and I’m looking forward to visiting the newest club in our District and sharing an evening of fellowship.

Bulletin Editor, Gabe Hau, has introduced our footy tipping competition, which should bring out the competitive spirit in most of us.  If you haven’t signed up, please do so and encourage our Friends of Rotary and your work colleagues to also join in.  The more we raise, the better our competition and the greater additional dollars for our projects.

Have you come across anyone new in your work travels who may be interested in becoming a Member?  With just over three months to go in this Rotary year, we should not take our eyes off our Membership drive.

Have a great week in Rotary.

President Philip

Last Week's Meeting

(Thanks to President Nominee Clinton for these cool scribe notes)

Meeting 521 Scribe Notes

This meeting was a Friends of Rotary night.

For this meeting, President Philip invited club members to speak about various activities they were looking after. This provided a great way for guests to find out more about the various activities the club is involved in.

Troy explained what the Friends of Rotary is.  Basically it allows anyone who is not a member to attend any dinner meetings and fellowship events without being a full member.  This is also a great way for people who want to be a part of the club but is not able to commit the time in being a member.

Clinton gave a quick run down of the community events coming up and asked if any members would be interested in assisting with organising the Kids Foundation Ball.

Tracey spoke about the upcoming street soccer and asked all members to advise Tracey even if they can't make it.

Rhys spoke about STEPS and how this organisation works with the homeless on the steps of Flinders St station.  The organisation will be having its 25th birthday in October and will be celebrating with a ball at that time.  The club is also assisting them to publish a book to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Steven M, the Community Service Awards project director, explained what this award was about and showcased the brand new brochure that will be distributed to the community.

Steven A, the Foundation director, talked about his experience at the recent Perth conference.  Steven also gave us a brief of Rolan Dillin who will be guest speaker at the club in two weeks time.

Stuart M provided an update to the work he and other members are doing by creating and relaunching a new looking club website.

Gordon gave a very comprehensive list of the packed activities coming up for the next few months.

  • Next Tuesday's meeting is at RC Docklands

  • 30th March - Roland Dillin will be guest speaker

  • 6th April our Police mentoree will be guest speaker

Rotary Foundation Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about making a Major Gift to the Annual Programs Fund of The Rotary Foundation.

Tom and Fran Bayless of Ohio are passionate about Rotary and support the Foundation in many ways. Tom made his wife, Fran, a Paul Harris Fellow to celebrate the birth of their first child. Their children became Paul Harris Fellows on special birthdays. Following open heart surgery, Tom and Fran decided to became major donors to the Foundation in celebration of her recovery. Said Fran, Anything we can do, we should do. . . Where does your backyard end?"

Our investment in time, talent and financial resources are an investment in making the world a safer and healthier place for our children and grandchildren.
