President Philip's Weekly Message

I hope everyone has had a really great Easter break and enjoyed this time with family and friends.

I’m delighted to advise that Gaby and Chris Abelskamp had a daughter, Sarah Ellen, on April 1.  Both mother and daughter are doing well and I’m sure everyone joins with me in congratulating Gaby and Chris on this wonderful news.

As you are aware, we have a business breakfast coming up on 20th April and I’m calling on all Members to support this event.  The speaker is internationally renowned futurist, Rohit Talwar.  As an award winning inspirational speaker, Rohit is also one of the top ten global future thinkers.  Hearing someone of this calibre promises to be an exceptional opportunity and one we should all promote to our networks, whether that includes work colleagues, professional associates and friends.  We have had this information out for some time now and it is critical that we maximise our bookings by the end of this week.  Please help by actioning this early and confirm your bookings to meetings@rotary.to  We will circulate another booking form tomorrow.

On a final note, as I’m away on holidays, Past President Tracey Browne will be chairing the meeting tomorrow and our guest speaker is our fabulous police mentee, Lisa Hardeman.  I’m sure it will be a great meeting.

Have a great week in Rotary.

President Philip

Last Week's Meeting

(Thanks to Mandy for these brilliant scribe notes)

Meeting 523 Scribe Notes

The meeting was held in the Drawing room at Crown with a good attendance.

Everyone was starting to get into holiday mode with Phillip looking forward to a holiday back in Tasmania with Trish and Gabe and Aurora sporting matching bright orange T-shirts celebrating their day off work together and looking very relaxed!

President Philip confessed to his president's neck piece  having been stolen from his car with a very nice bottle of wine and was very relieved when he received a phone call from an op-shop saying that they had the neck piece and was he looking for them.  Unfortunately for Philip, someone else enjoyed a few glasses of nice red wine that night.

The Guest speaker for the night was Roland Dillon, the District 9800 Ambassadorial Scholar sponsored by our club.   He is getting extremely excited as he is about to set off with his partner to New York to study his Masters of Public Administration over the next 12 months.  He and some other people passionate about energy efficiency have started up a group called JUST CHANGE which is a non for profit organisation and they have  set up a programme trying to improve energy efficiency and equity and working with landlords and tenants from the lower end of the rental market to educate and encourage landlords to install energy saving devices sponsored by business partners.

For Further information if you are interested you can go to www.justchangeaustralia.org.

Reminders for up and coming events :

  1. Business breakfast on April 20th at Crown with an excellent speaker talking about where businesses will be in the next 50 years.  Please register on the website soon if you are looking at attending.

  2. Service award night on May 20.  Anyone who can help on the night or before hand please see Clinton or Troy.

  3. The Kids Foundation Ball needs help selling tickets and President Philip and President-Elect Bettina reminded everyone of the club's commitment to this project and to assist and get behind it.  Items are also required for a silent Auction if anyone has anything to offer.

  4. Last but not least the president changeover dinner on July 2.

Stuart then gave a presentation on updating our website to make it more in line with what is happening in the online world these days with Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.  The new look website will be more of a community based website with multiple messages from local businesses and community groups.  It will be more a strategy of association rather than promoting Rotary.  Any input and assistance or suggestions is most welcome.

At next week's meeting will have Lisa Hardeman, our police mentee as guest speaker.  Lisa is the officer in charge of the St Kilda district who is always very interesting to listen to.  To close the meeting we exchanged banners with Ivory Roberts from her old Club of Wagga Wagga.

Have a great week everyone and a Happy and Safe Easter and hope to see you all next week.

Rotary Foundation Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about the impact of a Group Study Exchange (GSE).

For Stephen Rajamani, an insurance broker in Tamilnadu Provice, India the GSE experience was life-changing. Rajamani initially traveled to Brazil to learn about the culture and lifestyle and to learn about insurance practices there. His team visited many businesses, educational institutions and government offices. What Rajamani realized is that human beings are alike every where throughout the world, from the mayors and dignitaries who extended a warm welcome to the host families who showered the team members with affection. Upon returning home, Rajamani became a member of the Rotary Club of Manapparai and showed his gratitude to The Rotary Foundation by becoming a Paul Harris Fellow in his first year. Every Rotarian, Every Year – Be a part of it. Make your annual gift today.
