President Philip's Weekly Message
As you will all be aware, I spent this weekend
at Echuca for PETS (Presidents Elect Training Seminar), and as
always, I have returned inspired and impressed by the enthusiasm
and talent of our District’s incoming Club Presidents. Their
commitment and focus will ensure a good Rotary year ahead in our
District with some exciting projects across the Avenues of
Service.
The weekend’s sessions concluded with an amazing
presentation given via DVD by Past Rotary International
President Cliff Dochtermann. Whilst extremely humorous in his
portrayal of his early experience as a Rotarian and Club
President, he also left very strong messages about what makes a
successful club.
He spoke about the need to ensure our club
meeting rooms are “dressed” for Rotary with our emblems and
flags to create a true Rotarian atmosphere that will inspire
members and give them a sense of belonging; the importance of
welcoming guests in the same way we would welcome visitors into
our home or important clients to our business office; the
importance of expressing good manners towards guest speakers by
thanking them for the valuable time they have given up in
sharing some aspect of their lives or knowledge with our Club;
the necessity for Clubs to remain relevant to their communities
by researching and understanding the needs of our communities;
and, the critical need to ensure Rotary Clubs are “doing” Clubs
with members who are proactive, hands-on and actively engaged in
projects that make Rotary both relevant and necessary in our
communities - projects that make people aware of Rotary and
create a desire to be part of this wonderful world of Rotary.
Pertinent to this last point of PRIP Cliff
Dochtermann’s message, this past weekend saw Tracey Browne,
Clinton Wong and a team of eleven Rotarians and partners assist
with the running of the Street Soccer State Championships at
Camp Weekaway.
The weekend was a huge success with the biggest
turnout in the Championships’ history with over 80 participants.
Clinton Wong, our Community Service Director was amazed with
everyone’s endeavour and was particularly touched by the
beautiful manners of the participants. It’s certainly projects
like this that make being a Rotarian such a worthwhile
enterprise!
Have a great week in Rotary!
President Philip
Last Week's Meeting
(Thanks to
Steven A for these fab notes!)
Meeting 525 Scribe Notes
Guests
This week, we congratulate PP
Rhys for the birth of twin grandchildren, Jacob and Harper.
Tracey provided us with an
update of the Big Issue Street Soccer camp, held this weekend at
Camp Weekaway, near Lancefield. The camp is held annually, to
provide opportunities for socially marginalised members of our
community from street soccer teams all over the state to participate
in a weekend of personal development, team building and
sportsmanship. She advised the club of a generous $6000 corporate
donation recently pledged to assist in covering some the costs of
the camp as well has Past President Gabe's donation of a tub of
Chupa Chups to maintain our sugar levels during the camp!
We were all looking forward to a
special business breakfast featuring Rohit Talwar, a world leading
futurist, this Tuesday, 20th April. Unfortunately due to the travel
disruptions across Europe resulting from the eruption of the
Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland, Rohit is unable to arrive in
Melbourne in time for the event, and therefore we have been forced
to cancel the breakfast. Hopefully, Rohit will be able to travel to
Melbourne later in the week in time to host a special exclusive
CEO's breakfast on Friday 23rd April. Please contact President
Philip if you know any CEOs who may be interested in attending this
important fundraiser for the club.
Preparations for the Rotary Club
of Southbank Community Awards night on Thursday 20th May is
progressing well as the team led by Steven McI, assisted by Clinton,
Gordon and Philip continue their hard work in confirming community
and corporate sponsors for the event. Thanks very much also to Nick
for his continued generosity in supporting the event by providing
printing services.
Members are reminded to support
the club footy tipping competition, with payments to Treasurer
Tracey.
President Elect Bettina reminded
us of our commitment to the KIDS Foundation 2010 Annual Ball,
"Turning Scars into Stars". This important fundraising event will be
held on the 29 May 2010 at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne. Several
Rotarians from our club have volunteered to assist the Kids
Foundation Ball Committee to organise the event.
Steven A reminded us of our
club's commitment to the Every Rotarian Every Year contribution
programme, in support of the Rotary Foundation. He also provided an
update of the development of the new club website:
http://www.southbankrotary.org.au/,
encouraging members to embrace social networking on the web
including services such as Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter. Stuart
McA and team are working very hard to finalise the new club website
in the next few weeks. In preparation for the new site, members are
asked to verify and update their personal information recorded in
the existing website. An email will be sent to all members with
detailed instructions.
Sergeant Chris passionately told
us about an upcoming evening of entertainment on Tuesday 27th April
at our own "Rotary in Concert" at Crown. Partners, family and
friends are all invited. This will replace our weekly meeting during
that week.
After an entertaining fines
session, in Chris's true passionate style, he led a new style of
"multi-member's moment" involving a fun game of word association
across the room in fun theatre-sport style.
Our guest speaker this week was
PDG Dick Garner (District 9810), Zone 8 Australia, Public Awareness
Coordinator, who's role is to promote Rotary across the country. He
presented a compelling message and shared some new ideas about our
need to raise Rotary's profile in our business, educational and
social communities to create a new brand awareness through active
marketing and club engagement with the community. Some of the themes
he spoke about included the need to focus on humanitarian services,
the need to strengthen and support individual Rotary clubs ("....to
stop clubs clunking and start
clicking") and the need to
enhance the public perception of Rotary. He summarised a new set of
themes for Rotary as being "Community", "Globally", " Healthily",
Youthfully" and "Personally" and shared some entertaining videos to
drive his key messages.
Rotary Foundation
Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought
is about
opening doors for those in need.
A Rotary Foundation matching grant
for US$38,900 helped the Rotary Clubs of Istanbul-Findikli, Turkey
and East Salem, Oregon, USA purchase six sound-proof booths and
equipment to record books from Istanbul’s Beyazit Library. Books on
CD and MP3 give blind patrons of the library greater access to
knowledge and learning and help to improve the literacy rate in
Turkey. Through contributions to The Rotary Foundation Rotarians
become partners in opening doors for those in need.
