Ralph Coyne got to know East Timor in a remarkable way. In 1942 he was at a parade of 500 men when there was a call for signallers to join a special force to be dropped into enemy-held territory. He joined Sparrow Force and has had a unique relationship with East Timor for over 63 years as a result.  Click here for more information

Paul Mathewson from Big Brother Big Sister spoke about Victoria's oldest mentoring program. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a preventative program which provides young people aged 7 to 17 years with a caring adult mentor in their lives, someone to confide in and look up to. BBBS also manages the Government's Mentor Marketplace initiative.

Mary Smothers - spoke aboutn her experiences in Baghdad, Iraq from May 03-May 04 with the Alabama National Guard.  Her company worked with Iraqi police there in the police stations for the first six months, then opened the Baghdad Police Academy where they taught new police officers for their last six months.

Professor Ray Cas from Monash University and a Volcanologist brought us up-to-date on volcanoes: "Supervolcanoes - a hazard greater than tsunamis" - and other earth shattering news. A very topical subject. Ray was able to clearly and concisely explain the mysteries of super volcanoes and the enormous and unstoppable power of them. The recent series on ABC television was applauded by Ray as being essentially a scientifically correct analysis of the potential danger at Yellowstone in the USA.  It was a talk that was totally topical!

Bill gave us a taste of his superb Tribal Elder Shiraz, and an insight of how he and his wife Joan came to be involved in the exciting world of being a wine judge and an Award Winning wine exporter. Lizzie Corke amazed us with her enthusiasm and her achievements. Lizzie is in her early 20’s and together with her partner Shane Neal, has created the unique Cape Otway Centre for Conservation Ecology. It’s a business most would be proud to have built by the end of their careers!  Lizzie spoke to us about how she went about “Realising the Dream”.

Barry Douglas - Rotarian extraordinaire. Barry warmed our hearts and encouraged us by letting us know just how fabulous Rotary is as a support organisation for its members. Outstanding and nationally acclaimed speaker, Dr. Don Edgar certainly commanded  our attention with his talk on "Business partnerships and community networks". The phenomenon adult children who don't seem to want to leave home also got a mention...and many heads in the audience nodded in agreement! A terrific talk.

Ray Elliott shared his views on ethics, leadership and business in relation to decision-making about personal gain and corporate profit in a social context. Rotary's second object is to encourage and foster "High ethical standards in business and professions..." When we think of ethics and business together, Ray examined whether it is dismal self-interested pragmatism or utopian idealism we are thinking of. Ray is a distinguished psychologist and ethical crusader.

Robert Lewis Galinsky, noted screenwriter and comedy kink delighted us with tales from his past "Flatliners", and commented on the present and future or the Australian film industry. Peter Greenwood - President of committee of management of Port Melbourne Uniting Church Kindergarten - gave an update on their future plans for the kindergarten and special school where the Rotary Club of Southbank have helped out on many occasions in the past

Leigh Harry, CEO, Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre, together with Barbara Adams. Leigh explained why MECC is a World Winner for Melbourne, and he and Barbara gave a sneak preview of the plans to ensure it stays that way. Dr Alex Hyatt from the CSIRO, a world leader in Emerging Infectious Diseases and electron microscopy, infected us with his insights into this important area of research. You have probably heard of equine morbillivirus, but what about toxoplasmosis? And what do they have to do with cane toads?  Who is winning the war between the 'bugs' and ourselves.

The Island School. A visit to the Island School gave us all an opportunity to sample the culinary delights of the cordon bleue chefs of the future being trained at The Island. It was exciting to see The Island's woodworking area (beautiful furniture creations), automotive (first class service but super economic, car servicing and panel beating) and metal fabrication sections (fabulous braziers for your patio). Plus gardening and handyman opportunities for students under supervision to do first rate work for YOU.! METAC(Melbourne East Timorese Activities Centre) was a great place to be welcomed and entertained by Melbourne's East Timorese community when we visited them  in Richmond for our Rotary meeting combined with one of their monthly social nights.
